What is a full time data scientist?

Full time data scientists are professionals who use statistical, analytical, and programming skills to extract insights and knowledge from data. They typically work with large datasets to identify trends, build predictive models, and help organizations make data-driven decisions. As full-time employees, they collaborate with other teams, maintain data pipelines, and continuously improve algorithms to solve complex business problems. Their role can span various industries, including technology, finance, healthcare, and more.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time data scientist?

To thrive as a Full Time Data Scientist, you need a strong background in statistics, programming (often Python or R), and data analysis, typically supported by a degree in a quantitative field. Familiarity with machine learning libraries (such as scikit-learn or TensorFlow), data visualization tools, and experience working with large datasets are important, and certifications like AWS Certified Machine Learning can be beneficial. Problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help data scientists translate complex findings into actionable insights for diverse teams. These skills are essential for extracting value from data, driving business decisions, and ensuring successful project outcomes.

What are some common challenges full time data scientists face when working on cross-functional teams?

Full Time Data Scientists often collaborate with stakeholders from engineering, product, and business teams. A common challenge is effectively communicating complex technical concepts in a way that non-technical colleagues can understand, ensuring alignment on project goals. Additionally, balancing competing priorities—such as model accuracy versus production timelines—and managing expectations regarding data limitations can be demanding. Successful data scientists proactively foster strong relationships across teams and clarify project requirements early to overcome these challenges.

Job description

Data Scientist

Newton Research is a fast-growing software start-up founded by repeat entrepreneurs and well-funded by blue chip venture capital firms. We are building the next generation of the closed loop media lifecycle, developing AI agents that leverage the latest in LLMs and generative AI with specialized knowledge. Our products generate actionable business insights for our customers and partners, assisting in each step of the media planning, buying and measurement lifecycle.

Role Description

This is a full-time Data Scientist role with Newton Research, Inc., working from our offices in Needham, MA. You will develop production-level models and algorithms, analyze data, design experiments, and interpret results. More importantly, you will work with engineering to encode those abilities into software and train Newton to think like a data scientist. The data science team is small, so your work reaches customers quickly and your judgment shapes the product. We value self-motivated individuals who collaborate well across teams and can present and defend findings to stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD in a quantitative field such as Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
  • Strong foundation in data analysis, statistical modeling, and machine learning concepts.
  • Proficiency in Python, including data science libraries like pandas and scikit-learn, and writing code that ships to production.
  • Strong SQL and experience working with relational databases.
  • Experience with cloud data platforms such as Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, or Redshift.
  • Ability to evaluate a model, a causal experiment, or an AI-generated analysis and identify what it measures, where it fails, and how to verify it.
  • Ability to clearly explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience in media, marketing, advertising, or related industries is a strong plus.

Base Salary Range: $160,000-$180,000 + Equity
