Medical coding consultants work remotely to ensure accurate coding of the clinically documented care within medical records. They utilize industry coding guidelines along with specialized medical classification software to assign procedure and diagnosis codes. Experience with Trauma I and complex cases preferred.

Responsibilities:

Reviews medical record and appropriately assigns Facility E/M, CPT procedures, modifiers, injection and infusion, and ICD-10-CM in accordance with Official Coding Guidelines

Abstracts pertinent information from the medical record per guidelines and workflow

Emergency Department Coding Consultant Qualifications:

  • AHIMA (CCS, RHIT, RHIA) or AAPC (CPC) credential required.
  • Minimum of two years of Facility Emergency Department coding experience, with majority of experience falling in the last 12 months.
  • Experience with Level 1 Trauma in an academic setting is preferred
  • Experience coding other outpatient chart types (Observation, Wound Care, Same Day Surgery, PT/OT, Ancillary Services, etc) is a plus
  • Satisfactory completion of e4 Outpatient Diagnosis and Emergency Department Coding Tests - 85% or above.
  • Solid knowledge of Emergency Department documentation, charging, and coding workflows
  • Solid knowledge of E&M guidelines and assignment of CPT, Modifier and Injection and Infusion codes
  • Epic, 3M360 and Computer Assisted Coding (CAC) experience preferred
  • Maintains productivity expectations and coding quality accuracy rate of 95% or higher
  • Proficiency in MS Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel and Teams.
  • Experience with remote EHR access and encoder and must possess technical skill set sufficient to sustain independent remote working environment, including PC troubleshooting, program installation and VPN access.
  • Self-starter with strong interpersonal, analytical, and critical thinking skills. Must effectively communicate and be reliable.
  • Learns quickly and adapt to change.
