Position Summary
The Photography Technician works in consultation with the Photography Area Coordinator to support the technical needs of the photography area, including managing the photo equipment, facilities, and technical operations. The position requires capable management of student workers; cooperative engagement with students, faculty, and staff who use the facilities; and the ability to offer technical workshops in analog and digital processes, use of analog and digital cameras, and lighting equipment; and instruction on displaying work in the Weitman Gallery. The position also requires technical knowledge and expertise in darkroom and digital printing and the technical management of darkroom, digital, and lighting equipment. Further, in consultation with the Photography Area Coordinator and area faculty, the Photography Technician will assist in the management of the Weitman Gallery, providing assistance with install/deinstall, scheduling, and managing supplies.
An average of 21 hours per week presence on campus are required. Work hours will be coordinated with the area head in Photography and include weekly face-to-face coordinating meetings. THIS IS A PART-TIME, 9-MONTH APPOINTMENT, WORKING APPROXIMATELY 8/15 - 5/15 ANNUALLY.

Job Description

Ability to travel and work evening/weekend hours for special events.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manages student workers, which includes, but is not limited to, the following duties: 1) Recruiting, hiring, and training of student workers. 2) Review of student worker performance including intervention and additional training in the event a student worker is unable to perform duties to the level required. 3) Management of student worker schedule to ensure that lab hours are staffed sufficient for student needs. 4) Approval of student time sheets. 5) Drafting and revising of student worker training resources, such as the Monitor Manual.
  • Provides technical support for the operation of three photography lab areas: darkroom, digital lab, and lighting studio. Technician shall, where needed, develop protocols for ensuring safe use of area equipment; procedures and schedule for cleaning and maintenance of lab spaces; coordinating with University facilities to schedule maintenance and repairs on plumbing, electrical, and other infrastructure issues; and towards the smooth running of lab spaces.
  • Maintains equipment in all photography labs: lighting studio, darkroom, scanning room, and digital printing area. Where needed, Technician shall coordinate with Sam Fox School IT department on repairs and updates.
  • Co-management of Weitman Gallery in conjunction with Photography Area Coordinator and area faculty. Technician shall help manage installation and deinstallation of student or outside artist work; gallery schedule; tasks associated with any "open calls" for gallery shows, such as opening a Slideroom portal; ensuring the gallery cart and other equipment needed for the gallery is stocked and alert Area Coordinator when supplies are needed.
  • Instruction and training: where needed and by appointment, assist Photography and other Sam Fox Students, students in technical problem solving in the use of specific department equipment in lighting studio, darkroom, or digital lab. Lead cross-departmental workshops/demonstrations for courses needing to use photography facilities. Where needed, provide technical workshops for photography courses on the use of use of specific department equipment in lighting studio, darkroom, or digital lab.
  • Serve as the EPA/EHS Compliance Liaison including maintaining proper health and safety standards; managing and scheduling collection and disposal of hazardous waste; knowledge of and regular handling or working with hazardous materials; ensuring security and safety of the studio and equipment; supervising and instructing students regarding safe and proper use of equipment; ensuring that the studio is kept to fire code specifications; coordinating campus EHS inspections and area response to inspection reports if necessary. Implements and evolves safety protocols as directed.
  • Prepares Lighting studio, Darkroom, and Digital Lab for Fall and Spring semester courses. Delivers or coordinates delivery of orientations to students and faculty for specific technology, tool usage, and techniques in the Lighting studio, darkroom, and digital spaces---and, where applicable, manages student charges for facility use (such as the lighting studio).


Preferred Qualifications
  • MFA or other equivalent professional experience in photography.
  • Knowledge of photography, photographic processes, and photographic equipment.
  • Ability to work in and help service darkroom, digital, and lighting studio facilities.


Required Qualifications

Associate degree in related field, or high school diploma or equivalent high school certification and two years of related experience.

Salary Range
$21.60 - $33.45 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
