Amerisure is currently recruiting for a Managing Attorney - Staff Counsel, General & Auto Liability. This role will help set up our new office in Tampa, Florida. Looking for someone with a strong civil litigation background handling complex claims. The ideal candidate will also possess the following skill set.
Summary Statement
This role will lead our Florida auto and general liability defense Staff Counsel operation, including people management, performance, litigation quality, and client service. This is a strategic, hands-on leadership role responsible for launching the office, recruiting, and mentoring a litigation team, and ensuring best-in-class trial strategy, litigation outcomes, and client service.
Essential Tasks/Major Duties
  • Manage, train, provide performance feedback, and assign duties of direct reports (trial attorneys, paralegals, and legal support staff) to ensure productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness.
  • Launch and manage the Florida Staff Counsel office, including workflow process and staffing.
  • Supervise all phases of litigation (intake, strategy, pleadings, discovery, depositions, motion practice, trial, and post-trial follow-through) to ensure (i) strategic alignment, (ii) optimal outcomes, and (iii) early resolution, when appropriate.
  • Maintain a reduced caseload of moderately complex matters, and take the lead on key depositions, settlement discussions, etc., as needed.
  • Evaluate and monitor staffing levels to maintain appropriate service and litigation management standards.
  • Drive attorney performance, trial readiness, and professional development.
  • Design, implement, and continuously enhance litigation standards, file management protocols, and team workflows to drive operational excellence, ensure compliance, and support best-in-class legal outcomes.
  • Establish and continuously refine key performance indicators (KPIs)-including cycle time, resolution rates, trial outcomes, and litigation costs-to drive data-informed decision-making, enhance operational efficiency, and support strategic objectives through transparent reporting and actionable insights.
  • Ensure full compliance with all ethical, regulatory, and corporate governance requirements.
  • Implement systems for consistent reporting, quality control, and performance feedback.
  • Monitor and ensure that claims are adjudicated in accordance with Amerisure claims and litigation management guidelines and quality standards through quality assurance programs, including tracking compliance with internal control assessment requirements.
  • Collaborate with Claims to develop and implement service strategies that meet or exceed the service levels committed to agents and policyholders.
  • Provide guidance on settlement strategy.
  • Collaborate closely with Claims on strategy, escalation points, and settlement objectives.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Active license and in good standing with the Florida Bar.
  • 10 years of civil litigation experience in auto and general liability defense including significant first-chair trial experience.
  • 3 years of leadership experience.
  • Experience setting up and leading a staff counsel office for an insurer in Florida is required.
  • Deep understanding of Florida civil procedure, insurance law, and defense strategy.
  • Experience handling bodily injury litigation.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage litigation budgets, set legal strategy, and deliver business-aligned results.
  • Strong written and oral advocacy skills; adept at negotiation and courtroom presentation.
  • Ability to think strategically with supporting analytical and critical thinking skills, including the ability to deal with ambiguity.
  • Demonstrated successful ability to build positive partnerships and work collaboratively with cross-functional business teams.
  • Strong leadership capability with experience in building and leading highly successful teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact with all levels of the organization.
  • Tech-savvy (Microsoft Office, LexisNexis, AI, workflow creation, case-management systems, remote tools).
  • Maintains independence and ethical clarity.
  • Ability to travel overnight and locally up to 20%.
