What is a wholesale job?

Wholesale jobs involve the buying and selling of goods in large quantities, usually to retailers, other businesses, or professional users rather than directly to consumers. Positions in this field can range from sales representatives and account managers to logistics coordinators and warehouse staff. The main goal is to facilitate the efficient distribution of products from manufacturers to markets, ensuring smooth supply chains and competitive pricing. Wholesale professionals often negotiate bulk pricing, manage inventory, and build long-term business relationships with clients.

What is the difference between Wholesale vs Retail Sales Associate?

AspectWholesaleRetail Sales Associate

Work EnvironmentWarehouses, B2B sales settingsRetail stores, shopping centers
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturers, distributors, wholesalersRetail stores, malls, online shops
Common Search & ComparisonBulk sales, B2B transactionsCustomer service, in-store sales

Wholesale roles focus on selling products in bulk to other businesses, often in warehouses or B2B settings. Retail Sales Associates interact directly with consumers in stores, assisting with purchases and providing customer service. While both involve sales skills, their environments, target audiences, and job functions differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a wholesale role?

To thrive in wholesale, strong negotiation, sales, and inventory management skills are essential, often supported by a background in business or supply chain management. Familiarity with CRM software, inventory tracking systems, and order processing platforms is typically required. Excellent interpersonal communication, relationship-building, and problem-solving abilities help professionals stand out in this field. These skills are crucial for efficiently managing large product volumes, maintaining client relationships, and ensuring profitable business operations.

How do you become a wholesale?

To become a wholesale worker, you typically need to gain experience in sales, supply chain, or inventory management, often through entry-level positions or relevant training. Developing strong communication skills and understanding industry-specific products or markets can improve your chances, and some roles may require a high school diploma or equivalent. Certifications in sales or logistics can also be beneficial.

What are some common challenges faced in a wholesale sales role, and how can new employees overcome them?

Wholesale professionals often face challenges such as managing large order volumes, meeting sales targets, and navigating complex pricing negotiations with clients. New employees can overcome these obstacles by developing strong organizational skills, building solid relationships with both suppliers and buyers, and staying up-to-date with industry trends. Effective communication and the ability to adapt to clients’ changing needs are crucial for long-term success in this fast-paced environment.

Job description

Experienced Commercial Truck Wholesale Buyer/Seller

American Truck Centers
6860 E. US Highway 85, Commerce City, CO
Full-time | On-site with remote flexibility
Compensation: $75,000–$300,000+ annually

This Is Not an Entry-Level Position

American Truck Centers is hiring three experienced commercial truck wholesale buyer/sellers to join our growing wholesale department.

Candidates must have proven experience buying or selling used commercial trucks. We need professionals who understand truck specifications, wholesale values, market demand, negotiations, and relationship-based selling.

If you already have relationships with commercial truck dealers, fleets, leasing companies, auctions, and other industry sources, we provide the inventory, resources, and uncapped earning potential to help you grow.

About American Truck Centers

American Truck Centers is a nationwide buyer and seller of used commercial trucks. Our wholesale team buys and sells trucks across the country, working with dealerships, fleets, auctions, leasing companies, and end users.

We handle Class 4 through Class 8 commercial trucks, including:

  • Day cabs and sleepers
  • Box trucks
  • Dump trucks
  • Flatbeds
  • Cab and chassis trucks
  • Service and utility trucks
  • Vacuum, sewer, and other vocational trucks
What You’ll DoBuy Trucks
  • Source used commercial trucks from fleets, dealerships, leasing companies, auctions, and end users.
  • Develop new acquisition sources through consistent outbound prospecting.
  • Appraise trucks using specifications, mileage, condition, market demand, and comparable sales.
  • Negotiate purchases that meet the company’s inventory and profit requirements.
  • Inspect trucks personally or coordinate third-party inspections.
  • Identify fleet packages and other high-volume buying opportunities.
Sell Trucks
  • Develop and maintain relationships with wholesale dealers and commercial truck buyers nationwide.
  • Match available inventory with each buyer’s purchasing profile.
  • Market trucks through phone calls, email, text, and industry relationships.
  • Negotiate profitable wholesale transactions.
  • Follow up consistently and turn one-time buyers into repeat customers.
  • Maintain an active pipeline of buyers, sellers, and pending opportunities.
Manage Your Business
  • Track calls, contacts, appraisals, offers, purchases, and sales in the company CRM.
  • Stay current on wholesale values, auction results, freight conditions, and market trends.
  • Work closely with the wholesale manager, cold-calling team, service department, and transportation partners.
  • Travel when necessary to inspect trucks, attend auctions, and meet customers.
Required Experience
  • Minimum of two years of direct commercial truck wholesale buying or selling experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately appraise used commercial trucks.
  • Working knowledge of Class 4–8 trucks, specifications, applications, and market values.
  • Established relationships with truck dealers, fleet operators, auctions, leasing companies, or other industry sources.
  • Proven record of sourcing inventory, closing deals, and generating gross profit.
  • Strong negotiation, prospecting, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to work independently while remaining accountable to performance goals.
  • Willingness to make outbound calls and consistently develop new business.
  • Ability to travel as needed.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Automotive-only experience does not automatically qualify. Commercial truck wholesale experience is strongly preferred.

What We’re Looking For

The right person is:

  • A producer—not an order taker.
  • Comfortable buying and selling trucks over the phone.
  • Capable of making decisions using market data and sound judgment.
  • Persistent without damaging relationships.
  • Organized enough to manage multiple deals simultaneously.
  • Motivated by performance-based, uncapped earnings.
  • Honest, accountable, competitive, and hungry to grow.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Expected annual compensation of $75,000–$300,000+, based on production.
  • Uncapped earning potential.
  • Established wholesale operation with nationwide reach.
  • Support from two dedicated cold callers.
  • Access to inventory, marketing resources, inspection support, and transportation relationships.
  • Flexible work environment with remote options for proven producers.
  • Opportunity to buy and sell individual trucks and large fleet packages.
  • Supportive, competitive team culture focused on volume, profitability, and long-term relationships.
