What is the difference between a graphic designer and a visual designer?

A visual designer is a role that focuses on creating the overall look and feel of digital products, including layout, color schemes, and user interface elements, often requiring skills in design tools like Adobe XD or Figma. A graphic designer typically works on static visual content such as branding, print materials, and marketing assets. While both roles involve visual communication, visual designers emphasize digital experiences and user interaction, whereas graphic designers focus on visual identity and print media.

How does a Visual Designer typically collaborate with other teams during a project?

Visual Designers frequently collaborate with cross-functional teams such as product managers, UX/UI designers, developers, and marketing specialists. Throughout a project, they participate in brainstorming sessions, provide visual concepts, and iterate on feedback from stakeholders to ensure the final design aligns with both user needs and business goals. Effective communication and adaptability are key, as Visual Designers often need to balance creative vision with technical or brand requirements. This collaborative environment helps ensure cohesive and impactful visual experiences across digital and print platforms.

What are Visual Designers?

Visual Designers are creative professionals who focus on the appearance and aesthetics of digital products, such as websites, mobile apps, and user interfaces. They use typography, color, imagery, and layout to create visually appealing and effective designs that enhance user experience. Visual Designers often collaborate with UX designers, developers, and other team members to ensure the final product is both beautiful and functional. Their work helps communicate a brand’s message and values through visual elements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Visual Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Visual Designer, you need strong proficiency in graphic design principles, typography, color theory, and a portfolio demonstrating your creative work, often supported by a degree in design or a related field. Expertise in industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and familiarity with prototyping tools like Figma or Sketch are typically required. Exceptional communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills help Visual Designers work effectively with clients and cross-functional teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for creating compelling visuals that align with brand goals and ensure a seamless user experience.

Is AI replacing designers?

AI tools are increasingly used by visual designers to automate repetitive tasks, generate ideas, and enhance creativity. However, AI currently serves as a supplement rather than a replacement, as human creativity, critical thinking, and understanding of user experience remain essential in design work. Designers who adapt by learning to work with AI and develop skills in digital tools can stay competitive in the evolving industry.

What Is a Visual Designer?

A visual designer creates designs for clients. Their responsibilities include designing the visual aspects of advertisements, marketing campaigns, and products. Specific job duties vary depending on their employer or clients. For example, they may create product labels, layout print publications, or design web pages. They often meet with clients to determine their needs, collaborate with other graphic designers, create design plans, and submit sketches and project proposals.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

A successful freelance visual designer can earn $10,000 or more per month by working with clients on branding, digital media, or UI/UX projects, often leveraging skills in Adobe Creative Suite and a strong portfolio. High earnings typically require experience, a solid reputation, and the ability to secure consistent clients, but a formal degree is not always necessary in this field.

Job description

Company description
We're a team of makers and dreamers, turning strategic ideas into flawless retail executions. We collaborate closely with our clients to elevate the expected and embrace the new, the next, and the complex.
Nothing is impossible- If you can shop it, we can do it.
Overview
At Saatchi X, Visual Designers create simple, bold, unmistakably on-brand work across integrated omnichannel campaigns. We believe strong ideas deserve strong craft-and that great design happens when curious, opinionated people collaborate across disciplines to make work that actually connects.
Designers here are makers first-strong visual thinkers who execute beautifully and bring energy, curiosity, and care to every assignment.
As a mid-level Visual Designer, you'll support work for a large, highly regulated financial institution, operating confidently within established brand systems while elevating the work through exceptional typography, composition, and executional discipline.
This role is for designers who nerd out over type, care deeply about layout, and believe great ideas only land when the craft is just as strong.
Responsibilities
  • Design visual assets for integrated omnichannel campaigns across retail, digital, print, and presentations
  • Execute highly crafted design from established creative direction
  • Own typography decisions across layouts-headlines, subheads, body copy, captions
  • Build clear, intuitive type hierarchies and strong compositions
  • Sweat the details: kerning, leading, spacing, rhythm, balance
  • Build mood boards, storyboards, visual explorations, layouts, and design systems
  • Prepare clean, production-ready files with pride in craft and organization
  • Partner closely with copywriters, motion designers, and production teams
  • Show up to brainstorms, critiques, and reviews with ideas-and opinions
  • Manage multiple projects while keeping quality high

Qualifications
  • ~3 years of professional visual design experience (agency or in-house)
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating confidence in typography, layout, and execution
  • Fluency in Adobe Creative Suite; Figma experience a plus
  • Comfort designing across channels and formats
(Retail-forward experience is a strong plus)
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational habits
  • Ability to move quickly without sacrificing craft or quality
