What is the difference between a graphic designer and a Visual Designer?

A Visual Designer is a role that focuses on creating the overall look and feel of digital products, including user interfaces, branding, and visual storytelling, often requiring skills in UI/UX design and tools like Adobe XD or Figma. A graphic designer typically works on static visual content such as print materials, logos, and marketing collateral. While both roles involve visual creativity, Visual Designers usually work more closely with digital experiences and user-centered design processes.

What is the highest paid designer job?

Senior roles such as Creative Director or Design Director typically have the highest salaries among visual designers, often exceeding six figures annually. These positions require extensive experience, leadership skills, and proficiency with advanced design tools and strategic planning.

How does a Visual Designer typically collaborate with other teams during a project?

Visual Designers frequently collaborate with cross-functional teams such as product managers, UX/UI designers, developers, and marketing specialists. Throughout a project, they participate in brainstorming sessions, provide visual concepts, and iterate on feedback from stakeholders to ensure the final design aligns with both user needs and business goals. Effective communication and adaptability are key, as Visual Designers often need to balance creative vision with technical or brand requirements. This collaborative environment helps ensure cohesive and impactful visual experiences across digital and print platforms.

What are Visual Designers?

Visual Designers are creative professionals who focus on the appearance and aesthetics of digital products, such as websites, mobile apps, and user interfaces. They use typography, color, imagery, and layout to create visually appealing and effective designs that enhance user experience. Visual Designers often collaborate with UX designers, developers, and other team members to ensure the final product is both beautiful and functional. Their work helps communicate a brand’s message and values through visual elements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Visual Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Visual Designer, you need strong proficiency in graphic design principles, typography, color theory, and a portfolio demonstrating your creative work, often supported by a degree in design or a related field. Expertise in industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and familiarity with prototyping tools like Figma or Sketch are typically required. Exceptional communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills help Visual Designers work effectively with clients and cross-functional teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for creating compelling visuals that align with brand goals and ensure a seamless user experience.

Is AI replacing designers?

AI tools are increasingly used by visual designers to automate repetitive tasks, generate ideas, and enhance creativity. However, AI currently serves as a complement rather than a replacement, as human creativity, critical thinking, and understanding of user experience remain essential in design work. Designers who adapt by learning new tools and skills can leverage AI to improve productivity and innovation.

What Is a Visual Designer?

A visual designer creates designs for clients. Their responsibilities include designing the visual aspects of advertisements, marketing campaigns, and products. Specific job duties vary depending on their employer or clients. For example, they may create product labels, layout print publications, or design web pages. They often meet with clients to determine their needs, collaborate with other graphic designers, create design plans, and submit sketches and project proposals.

Job description

Illustration design experience is a MUST HAVE!

Description

We’re looking for an experienced Product/Visual Designer to join the team responsible for building internal/external Human Interface Guidelines (HIG) — a design‑system‑driven website similar in purpose to Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines.

This is a highly visible initiative within the design organization. You’ll take ownership of the next phases of the HIG build-out, replacing placeholder components with the updated Design System, creating polished UI assets, and partnering closely with engineers to ensure meticulous implementation.

This role is ideal for designers who:

- Love working with design systems

- Have exceptional visual design and UI craftsmanship

- Are highly detail-oriented

- Enjoy collaborating with engineers to bring a system to life

- You’ll work end‑to‑end across UX and UI, but the work leans heavily visual.

What You’ll Do

  • Own ongoing design work for Human Interface Guidelines website
  • Replace existing Buick system components with updated Design System components (fonts, tokens, patterns, etc.)
  • Create new UI assets, templates, and occasional screens for upcoming pages (FAQ, support, etc.)
  • Develop clean, scalable visuals that will be used by designers, engineers, and internal teams across the organization
  • Partner with engineering to provide VQA/QA feedback, ensure pixel‑perfect implementation, and maintain design accuracy
  • Collaborate with design leadership in working sessions to understand requirements
  • Support future HIG releases and then shift to additional design work while continuing to maintain the site as updates emerge

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong visual/UI design skills with a polished portfolio demonstrating component‑level and system‑level craft
  • Deep design‑system experience — swapping components, applying tokens, typography, states, and documentation
  • End‑to‑end product design capability (light UX + strong UI)
  • Exceptional attention to detail and comfort being meticulous in both design and QA
  • Experience partnering closely with engineering during handoff, VQA, and implementation
  • Familiarity with building assets and templates for content-heavy sites
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with evolving requirements

Nice to Have

  • Experience working with CMS platforms
  • Previous work on guideline sites, documentation portals, or large design systems

Work Environment

Engineering teams operate on Eastern Time — EST preferred
