Job description

Description Under the direction of the assigned manager, develop and initiate complete graphic designs, layouts and finished artwork for illustrative purposes; produce graphic print materials for District use; and perform a variety of typesetting tasks in the production of various materials. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is a single level specialized classification allocated only to the Publication Center. The Graphic Artist is responsible for independently developing and initiating complete graphic designs, layouts and finished artwork for illustrative purposes; and producing graphic print materials for District use.

Responsibilities and Duties ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Design and produce a wide variety of graphic art for printing; produce a wide variety of printed materials for the District including the college catalog, class schedule, phone directories, newsletters, publications, handouts, and brochures. Schedule and prioritize graphic or printed material design and typesetting operations; oversee and train student workers in appropriate graphic art design and typesetting. Operate a variety of graphic production equipment including computers and supporting software applications and programs; utilize a variety of computer software programs in the performance of typesetting functions.

Answer telephone and assist customers in the print shop; respond to inquiries and complaints; provide information to faculty, staff, students and the general public on graphic services. Create original layouts as requested by staff; enter copy and design information on computer system; edit, proof and print copy. Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications Knowledge of: Complex methods and techniques of graphic arts design and production. Principles, practices and procedures of typesetting. Standard office procedures, methods and equipment including computers, scanners, paper cutter, laminating and punch/bind/unbind machines.

Methods and techniques of electronic page layout. Basic copyright laws and how they apply to items used for publication. Principles and techniques of creating computerized graphics.

Operational characteristics, applications, and functions of a variety of modern graphics software programs. Principles and practices of customer service. Ability to: Originate and create artistic designs for materials to be used in instructional, promotional and college programs.

Perform a variety of typesetting functions. Operate computers and supporting software applications and programs. Use modern computers and related software to design and produce camera ready art.

Arrange, layout and make effective use of visual materials. Respond to requests from faculty, staff and students. Interpret user requirements into appropriate graphic materials.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees and others encountered in the course of work.

Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students and staff as demonstrated by skills and abilities in cultural responses and cultural humility. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be: Education: Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in graphic arts or related field.

Experience: One year's experience of graphic art design and production with an agency, company, or organization. Physical Demands: Regularly perform desk-based computer tasks.
