Senior Visual Designers frequently work closely with UX/UI designers, product managers, developers, and marketing teams to ensure cohesive visual solutions that align with brand objectives and user needs. Being proactive in meetings, open to feedback, and adept at using design collaboration tools are essential skills that help foster smooth teamwork and successful project outcomes.

What are Senior Visual Designers?

Senior Visual Designers are experienced professionals who create and oversee the visual aspects of products, branding, and digital experiences. They work on designing user interfaces, marketing materials, and other visuals to ensure a consistent and appealing look across all platforms. In addition to hands-on design work, they often lead design teams, collaborate with clients and stakeholders, and help set the overall creative direction for projects. Their role requires a strong understanding of design principles, user experience, and current trends in visual communication.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Visual Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Visual Designer, you need expert-level proficiency in visual design principles, a strong portfolio demonstrating creative problem-solving, and a relevant degree in graphic or visual design. Mastery of industry-standard design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, Figma, and familiarity with design systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, collaboration, and leadership skills help you articulate design decisions and mentor junior designers. These skills ensure the creation of visually compelling, brand-consistent work that meets business goals and enhances user experiences.

Job description

Senior Visual Designer

We're seeking a Senior Visual Designer to join a large North American financial institution undergoing a significant visual refresh of its digital experience.

This role sits at the intersection of brand, product, and systems — owning visual direction for the digital workstream and helping define a modern, cohesive visual point of view that product and UX teams can apply across consumer-facing digital journeys.

The work is highly collaborative, with close partnership across Wealth, UX Research, Design Systems, Brand, and Engineering. The role balances hands-on visual craft with systems thinking — translating exploratory visual work into scalable, production-ready patterns that live within and influence the broader design system.

Responsibilities

  • Own and evolve visual direction for the digital refresh, working toward shared milestones alongside ongoing product delivery
  • Define and design scalable visual patterns across typography, color, layout, iconography, illustration, and motion
  • Develop UI and component-level direction that product and UX designers can confidently apply across consumer digital journeys
  • Translate visual exploration into reusable, production-ready assets and patterns for adoption by product teams
  • Partner with the Wealth design team to maintain alignment and a cohesive visual POV across parallel workstreams
  • Collaborate with UX Research to ground visual decisions in customer insight, usability findings, and testing
  • Contribute to the evolution of the design system — ensuring new patterns are documented, accessible, and ready for adoption
  • Create and maintain clear visual standards, usage guidelines, and best practice documentation
  • Communicate visual rationale effectively to cross-functional stakeholders and leadership
  • Work in short, iterative cycles to explore, test, refine, and align on visual direction

Qualifications

  • 5–7+ years of experience in visual design, with work across design systems or large-scale product ecosystems
  • Portfolio demonstrating strong visual craft, scalable systems or libraries, component and UI-level design, and motion or interaction design where applicable
  • Deep expertise in typography systems, color, layout, iconography, and motion
  • Proficiency in Figma and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, After Effects)
  • Experience delivering motion or interaction assets (e.g., Lottie or equivalent)
  • Familiarity with front-end implementation considerations (HTML/CSS/JS concepts)
  • Strong understanding of inclusive design and accessibility standards
  • Comfortable balancing exploratory visual refresh work with systemization and documentation
  • Strong collaboration and stakeholder management skills in complex, cross-team environments
  • Experience working within agile, cross-functional teams

We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, disability status, or other non-merit factor. We are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment for all employees.
