What is a Freelance Visual Designer?

A Freelance Visual Designer is a creative professional who works independently, rather than as a full-time employee, to design visual elements for clients. Their work includes creating graphics, layouts, illustrations, and digital assets for websites, advertisements, branding, and more. Freelance Visual Designers typically collaborate with clients remotely or on a contract basis, managing their own schedules and projects. They use design software such as Adobe Creative Suite to bring concepts to life and ensure visual consistency with brand guidelines. Freelancers often work with agencies, startups, or individual business owners looking for specialized design expertise.

Search/Comparison IntentFreelance Visual Designer vs Graphic Designer

While both roles involve visual communication, a Freelance Visual Designer typically works independently on diverse projects for multiple clients, focusing on branding, UI, or marketing visuals. A Graphic Designer may work in-house or for agencies, often on specific branding or print projects. The key difference lies in the work setting and client interaction, with freelancers offering more flexibility and variety.

How do freelance visual designers typically collaborate with clients and other creative professionals during a project?

Freelance visual designers often work remotely and communicate with clients through email, video calls, and project management tools to discuss project goals, share drafts, and gather feedback. Collaboration with other professionals, such as copywriters, developers, or marketing teams, is common, especially for larger projects. Clear communication, adaptability, and proactive updates help ensure alignment with client expectations and project timelines. Building strong relationships and maintaining a professional workflow are key to successful collaborations and repeat business.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Visual Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Visual Designer, you need a strong grasp of design principles, proficiency in layout and typography, and typically a portfolio demonstrating creative skills. Expertise in industry-standard tools like Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and familiarity with digital design platforms are essential. Outstanding communication, time management, and client collaboration skills help set exceptional designers apart. These competencies ensure you can deliver high-quality, on-brand visuals that meet client needs and adapt to diverse projects in a competitive freelance market.

Job description

Company Description

Comoto Holdings is America's largest and fastest growing omnichannel platform in the powersports aftermarket-products industry; dedicated to advancing the experience of moto enthusiasts across the globe. Comoto's brands, RevZilla, Cycle Gear, J&P Cycles, REVER, and Common Tread, deliver premium products, dedicated expertise, engaging media, and passionate customer support of the rider community, through best-in-class e-commerce and retail experiences.

Job Description

At Comoto, creative isn't just a service function, it's a core part of how we show up for motorcycle riders. Our work reaches millions of people across RevZilla, Cycle Gear, J&P Cycles and REVER, and we take that responsibility seriously (while still having a lot of fun doing it).

We're looking for a Freelance Visual Designer who can integrate with our creative team and deliver high-quality work across a variety of projects. The ideal candidate has a strong eye for design and typography, pays close attention to detail, and is comfortable working within established brand guidelines, templates and campaign systems.

Success in this role means balancing creativity with consistency. You should be able to take clear art direction from our Art Directors, execute against existing creative frameworks, and produce polished assets that align with our brands while contributing thoughtful design solutions when opportunities arise. We value someone who is collaborative, dependable, adaptable and able to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a high standard of craft.

What We Value in This Role:

  • A sharp eye for design: typography, layout, hierarchy, color, composition, and consistency all matter here.
  • Ability to work within established brand guidelines, templates, and campaign systems while maintaining a high level of design quality.
  • Comfortable taking art direction and incorporating feedback quickly and effectively.
  • Able to manage multiple projects daily and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment without compromising quality.
  • Proficient in creating digital marketing assets, including web graphics, emails and social media.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to follow file naming conventions, workflows, and documentation standards.
  • Collaborative communicator who works effectively with Art Directors, copywriters and cross-functional partners.
  • Self-motivated, dependable and responsive
  • Experience adapting existing creative concepts into multiple formats and sizes while preserving visual consistency.
  • Comfortable using Adobe Creative Cloud (particularly Photoshop and Illustrator)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and deliver compelling visual solutions across web and digital assets, social media, email marketing, direct mail pieces, and in-store signage.
  • Develop creative, effective design solutions for marketing campaigns in close collaboration with the Art Director and Stakeholders.
  • Organize and manage multiple projects to meet deadlines, specifications, and quality standards.
  • Prepare final files for production and handoff, following established workflows, naming conventions, and quality assurance processes.
  • Contribute as a reliable extension of the internal creative team, communicating proactively and delivering work that meets a high standard of quality and craftsmanship.

Moto Industry Knowledge:

You don't need to be a motorcycle expert - we're more than happy to teach you the industry. What matters is your curiosity and desire to understand our customers, our products and the world they live in. The more you understand riders, the better your work will be.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of professional experience or equivalent education in Graphic Design or a related discipline.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign & After Effects.
  • Proficiency in Figma is required.
  • Strong foundation in typography, color theory, composition, spacing, hierarchy & concept development.
  • Experience working within a design team and contributing to collaborative workflows.
  • Ability to articulate the rationale behind design decisions to both creative and non-creative partners.
  • Highly organized-from file structure to layered files, you make it easy for others to review and build on your work.
  • Comfortable managing multiple projects, priorities & deadlines.
  • Experience creating GIFs, animations, or motion graphics for social & email.

Final Details:

  • $50-$55 per hour, based on experience
  • Location: Philadelphia-based freelancers have the option to work from our office 1-3 days a week.
  • Application Requirement: You must submit a resume and a link to a portfolio showcasing a variety of styles. Portfolios are essential to demonstrate your design capabilities, versatility, and thinking.
