What is the difference between a graphic designer and a Visual Designer?

A Visual Designer is a role that focuses on creating the overall look and feel of digital products, including user interfaces, branding, and visual storytelling, often requiring skills in UI/UX design and tools like Adobe XD or Figma. A graphic designer typically works on static visual content such as print materials, logos, and marketing collateral. While both roles involve visual creativity, Visual Designers usually work more closely with digital experiences and user-centered design processes.

What is the highest paid designer job?

Senior roles such as Creative Director or Design Director typically have the highest salaries among visual designers, often exceeding six figures annually. These positions require extensive experience, leadership skills, and proficiency with advanced design tools and strategic planning.

How does a Visual Designer typically collaborate with other teams during a project?

Visual Designers frequently collaborate with cross-functional teams such as product managers, UX/UI designers, developers, and marketing specialists. Throughout a project, they participate in brainstorming sessions, provide visual concepts, and iterate on feedback from stakeholders to ensure the final design aligns with both user needs and business goals. Effective communication and adaptability are key, as Visual Designers often need to balance creative vision with technical or brand requirements. This collaborative environment helps ensure cohesive and impactful visual experiences across digital and print platforms.

What are Visual Designers?

Visual Designers are creative professionals who focus on the appearance and aesthetics of digital products, such as websites, mobile apps, and user interfaces. They use typography, color, imagery, and layout to create visually appealing and effective designs that enhance user experience. Visual Designers often collaborate with UX designers, developers, and other team members to ensure the final product is both beautiful and functional. Their work helps communicate a brand’s message and values through visual elements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Visual Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Visual Designer, you need strong proficiency in graphic design principles, typography, color theory, and a portfolio demonstrating your creative work, often supported by a degree in design or a related field. Expertise in industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and familiarity with prototyping tools like Figma or Sketch are typically required. Exceptional communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills help Visual Designers work effectively with clients and cross-functional teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for creating compelling visuals that align with brand goals and ensure a seamless user experience.

Is AI replacing designers?

AI tools are increasingly used by visual designers to automate repetitive tasks, generate ideas, and enhance creativity. However, AI currently serves as a complement rather than a replacement, as human creativity, critical thinking, and understanding of user experience remain essential in design work. Designers who adapt by learning new tools and skills can leverage AI to improve productivity and innovation.

What Is a Visual Designer?

A visual designer creates designs for clients. Their responsibilities include designing the visual aspects of advertisements, marketing campaigns, and products. Specific job duties vary depending on their employer or clients. For example, they may create product labels, layout print publications, or design web pages. They often meet with clients to determine their needs, collaborate with other graphic designers, create design plans, and submit sketches and project proposals.

Overview

LegalZoom’s Brand & Creative team is looking for a craft-obsessed Principal Visual Designer to shape how our brand comes to life across experiences. As a senior individual contributor, you'll define and elevate the visual expression of the LegalZoom brand. You'll set the standard for visual craft by creating thoughtful, distinctive, customer-centered work and influencing creative direction across the organization, ensuring every touchpoint reflects a cohesive, high-quality design language.

You'll partner across Brand, Marketing, Product, Content, and Engineering to translate business strategy into compelling visual experiences that strengthen our brand and deepen customer trust. Whether designing high-impact web experiences, evolving our visual systems, or setting creative direction for major initiatives, you'll raise the quality of everything we create.

This is a highly hands-on role for someone who thrives in the work while influencing through craft, collaboration, and vision rather than people management.

You Will

  • Lead the visual direction and execution of high-impact design initiatives across LegalZoom's marketing ecosystem, including brand identity systems, creative execution across integrated marketing campaigns, advertising, web, presentations, editorial design, and a broad range of marketing and graphic design assets.

  • Design best-in-class marketing web experiences that balance storytelling, usability, accessibility, and business performance.

  • Evolve and expand LegalZoom's visual language, ensuring consistency while pushing the brand forward in meaningful ways.

  • Establish scalable visual systems, templates, and patterns that improve quality and efficiency across teams.

  • Partner closely with Brand, Growth Marketing, Product Marketing, Product Design, Content Design, Engineering, and external agencies to bring integrated experiences to life.

  • Translate business goals, customer insights, and brand strategy into thoughtful visual solutions that resonate with our audiences.

  • Champion exceptional craft through design critiques, mentorship, and thoughtful feedback, helping raise the quality of design across the organization.

  • Implement emerging technologies, AI-powered creative workflows, and evolving digital design trends to continually improve how we work and what we create.

  • Present work confidently to cross-functional leaders, clearly communicating design rationale and influencing decisions through strong visual storytelling.

  • Take ownership of complex, ambiguous design challenges from concept through launch while maintaining an exceptional level of craft and attention to detail.

You Have

  • 8-10+ years of experience creating exceptional visual design work for digital products, consumer brands, or technology companies.

  • An outstanding portfolio demonstrating excellence across marketing websites, brand design, visual systems, digital campaigns, and customer experiences.

  • Exceptional typography, composition, layout, color, and visual storytelling skills with meticulous attention to detail.

  • Deep expertise designing responsive web experiences and a strong understanding of modern web capabilities, accessibility, and performance considerations.

  • Fluency in Figma and modern collaborative design workflows.

  • Experience building and maintaining scalable design systems and visual frameworks.

  • Strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to influence stakeholders across disciplines and organizational levels.

  • A collaborative mindset and a proven ability to lead through influence rather than formal authority.

  • Curiosity, strong creative instincts, and a desire to continually push the quality of both the work and the team's creative standards.

The salary range for this role is $171,000-$190,000. Actual compensation offered will depend on several factors including but not limited to: geographic location, work experience, education, skill level, and/or other business and organizational needs.
