What is the difference between Temporary Engineering vs Contract Engineering?

AspectTemporary EngineeringContract Engineering
DurationShort-term, project-based or seasonalProject-specific, can be short or long-term
Employment StatusTypically employed through staffing agenciesHired directly or through agencies for specific projects
CredentialsUsually requires engineering degree and relevant certificationsSame as temporary engineering, often similar credentials
Work EnvironmentOn-site or remote, varies by projectOn-site or remote, depending on project needs

Temporary Engineering involves short-term, project-based roles often filled through staffing agencies, focusing on immediate project needs. Contract Engineering also involves project-specific work but can be longer-term and may involve direct hiring. Both roles require similar credentials and work environments, but differ mainly in duration and employment structure.

What is the easiest engineering job to get into?

Entry-level engineering roles such as civil or manufacturing engineering are often considered easier to enter due to high demand and lower certification barriers. These positions typically require a bachelor's degree and basic technical skills, making them accessible for recent graduates or those transitioning into engineering fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Temporary Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Temporary Engineer, you typically need an engineering degree, relevant technical expertise, and the ability to quickly adapt to new projects or environments. Familiarity with industry-specific software (such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or MATLAB) and compliance with safety or quality certifications may be required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and time management skills help temporary engineers integrate quickly and contribute effectively within diverse teams. These abilities are vital for delivering quality results on short-term assignments and ensuring seamless project execution.

What jobs make $1,000,000 per year?

In the field of temporary engineering, high-earning roles such as senior engineering consultants, project managers, or specialized technical experts can reach or exceed $1,000,000 annually through a combination of high billable rates, bonuses, and consulting fees. These positions typically require extensive experience, advanced skills, and often involve working on large-scale or complex projects. Such earnings are more common in senior or executive-level roles within engineering consulting firms or specialized industries.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in fields such as petroleum, aerospace, and software engineering can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, specialized skills, and leadership roles. High compensation often involves working in high-demand industries, managing large projects, or holding executive-level responsibilities.

What are some common challenges faced by temporary engineers, and how can they navigate them effectively?

Temporary engineers often face challenges such as quickly adapting to new company cultures, learning unfamiliar systems, and managing short onboarding periods. To succeed, it's important to proactively communicate with team members, ask clarifying questions early on, and make use of available documentation and resources. Building strong relationships with colleagues and demonstrating flexibility can also help temporary engineers integrate smoothly and make a meaningful impact during their assignment.

What are temporary engineering jobs?

Temporary engineering jobs are short-term positions where engineers are hired for a specific project or a set period, rather than as permanent employees. These roles can cover a wide range of engineering disciplines, such as civil, mechanical, electrical, or software engineering. Temporary engineers often help companies manage increased workloads, cover employee leaves, or bring in specialized skills for particular projects. These positions can offer valuable experience and networking opportunities, and sometimes lead to permanent employment.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering with extensive experience and advanced skills can earn $500,000 or more annually, often including bonuses and stock options. These roles typically require advanced degrees, certifications, and leadership responsibilities within high-demand industries.

Job description

As a full-service engineering, design, and construction services firm, Mi-Tech delivers comprehensive support for utility and infrastructure projects from planning and design through execution. Our multidisciplinary team provides practical, innovative solutions that emphasize cost efficiency, constructability, and long-term value. Founded in 1985, Mi-Tech has built a reputation for excellence in engineering, design, environmental, laboratory, technical, and field services across multiple industries. The 2026 merger with J.D. Hair & Associates further strengthened our capabilities and resources, adding decades of specialized expertise in trenchless, geotechnical, and structural engineering to our core offerings. As a proud member of the Michels Family of Companies, Mi-Tech collaborates with an internationally respected team to deliver integrated, end-to-end engineering, design, and construction solutions that meet the highest standards of quality and performance.

In your role as a senior structural engineer at Mi-Tech, you'll design a wide variety of temporary and permanent structures associated with the construction of utility, infrastructure and heavy civil projects. Primary job responsibilities include developing calculation submittals, coordinating development of design and shop drawings, and supporting project pursuits and bids through preliminary evaluations and analyses.  Additional tasks include mentoring and supporting other engineers, communication and coordination with design and field teams, and providing support to the Principal Engineer with any other assigned duties.

Why Mi-Tech Services Inc.?

  • We are committed to hiring the best people and giving them the best equipment.
  • We are dedicated to improving energy distribution & telecommunication services that serve and improve the communities around us.
  • Our steady, strategic growth revolves around a commitment to quality. If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right.
  • We are family owned and operated. We work to see each other succeed, not to increase a stock market valuation.
  • We invest an average of $5,000 per employee on training each year. We want each of our team to learn and grow.
  • We believe everyone is responsible for promoting safety, regardless of job title. We are our brothers' and sisters' keeper.
  • We are a part of the Michels Family of Companies - one of North America's largest, most diversified energy and infrastructure construction companies.

Why you?

  • You like to surround yourself with dedicated, genuine, value-driven people.
  • You are up to new challenges and opportunities. You like to learn and try new things.
  • You cringe when you hear: "Because that's the way we've always done it."
  • You like to know your efforts are noticed and appreciated.
  • You believe that individual commitment to a group effort is key to success.
  • You want your work to make a tangible difference in people's lives.

What It Takes

  • Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering and have 4 to 8 years of experience in the design of temporary works, heavy civil, or infrastructure projects.
  • Masters degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in structures preferred.
  • Hold an active Professional Engineer license in any state.
  • Proficiency with MS Excel, Mathcad, AutoCAD, and Finite Element Analysis.
  • Basic knowledge of geotechnical engineering and related structures (foundations, retaining walls, and earth retention systems) is a plus.
  • Previous construction field experience is a plus.
  • Candidate must possess a strong attention to detail and the ability to work in a quickly changing environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication are required.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record as determined by the Michels Review Team
