The purpose of the Trainee position is to prepare individuals over a 12-month period for an Inside Sales or Estimator role, and longer-term, potentially Branch Manager, Outside Sales, or Corporate role, as their knowledge, experience, and performance allows. The Trainee will be cross-trained in core business functions to include, but not limited to, warehouse operations, product delivery, sales, and customer relationships/service. Trainees will also be exposed to branch level accounting, inventory management, human resources, safety/compliance, and customer invoicing.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Answer multi-line telephone system

  • Assist customers

  • Generate frequent progress reports on training status

  • Pull orders with 100% accuracy and package safely to load on trucks

  • Maintain a clean and organized warehouse and yard

  • Use various moving equipment to handle large materials

  • Ensure forklifts are kept in good and safe working condition

  • Schedule UPS Shipments

  • Make customer deliveries (non-CDL) as needed

  • Work with walk-in customers regarding questions on orders, quotes and/or job specifications

  • Assist with take offs, enter bids and process submittals

  • Receive and check accuracy of inventory received from vendors

  • Stock and restock inventory/materials

  • Purchase material that is needed outside of regular inventory purchases

  • Order regular stock inventory

  • Generate new and repeat sales by providing product and technical information to customers

  • Accurately process customer transactions such as orders, quotes or returns

  • Work closely with vendors to make sure product shipment /delivery dates are adhered to and communicate appropriately to the customer of any changes

  • Responsible for timely and accurate data entry of sales orders and/or purchase orders into the Mincron system

  • Load and unload trucks

  • Proactively recommend products to customers

  • Contact customer following sales to ensure ongoing customer satisfaction and resolve any complaints

  • Assist with physical inventory counts

  • Attend continuing education classes and University of Fortiline sessions as assigned

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Experience/Skills/Abilities

  • Must be willing to relocate upon conclusion of the Trainee program

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals

  • Present a professional image at all times to customers and vendors

  • Develop strong working relationship with customers

  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence

  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of Fortiline Waterworks

  • Basic to intermediate math skills - Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations

  • Proficient in Mincron and MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)

  • Safe operation of a forklift

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Typical office and warehouse (inside/outside) environment - moderate noise level

  • Some travel is required as this position could potentially support other branch locations

  • Regularly requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, use of hands, reaching

  • Requires some stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.

  • Occasional lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds

Education & Knowledge

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • College degree preferred but not required
