What is a technical account manager?

A Technical Account Manager (TAM) is a professional who serves as the main point of contact between a company and its clients for technical support and account management. TAMs work closely with customers to understand their technical needs, provide guidance on product usage, resolve issues, and ensure overall customer satisfaction. They often collaborate with engineering, sales, and support teams to deliver tailored solutions and help clients achieve their business objectives. TAMs play a crucial role in building long-term relationships and maximizing the value clients receive from a company's products or services.

How to become a technical account manager?

To become a technical account manager (TAM), you need a bachelor’s degree in advertising, communications, public relations, or a related field, and many aspiring TAMs also obtain a master’s degree. Other qualifications for this job include a thorough knowledge of business and marketing, experience as an assistant account manager or related position, and industry certification. The career of a technical account manager is demanding. You must stay focused and composed in high-stress, high-stakes situations. Strong communication skills are essential because you interact with clients, staff, and customers on a day-to-day basis.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical account manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Account Manager, you need a solid background in IT or engineering, customer relationship management, and typically a degree in a relevant field. Familiarity with CRM software, cloud platforms, and technical troubleshooting tools is often required, along with certifications like ITIL or relevant vendor accreditations. Strong communication, problem-solving, and project management skills help you build trust and deliver value to clients. These competencies are essential for managing client expectations, resolving technical issues efficiently, and fostering long-term business partnerships.

How do technical account managers typically balance technical troubleshooting with client relationship management in their daily work?

Technical Account Managers (TAMs) often split their time between resolving technical issues and proactively nurturing client relationships. While addressing technical challenges—such as troubleshooting software integrations or coordinating with engineering teams—they also serve as the primary point of contact for clients, ensuring their needs are met and anticipating potential concerns. TAMs regularly schedule status meetings, provide product training, and relay client feedback to internal teams. This dual focus helps build trust and ensures clients maximize the value of the company's products and services.

Job description

The Position

CallRail is looking for an Account Manager to own and grow a portfolio of existing customer accounts. This role is responsible for driving expansion and cross-sell revenue, protecting retention, and acting as the primary point of contact for customers looking to get more value out of CallRail's platform. You'll run product demos, identify growth opportunities within your book of business, and partner closely with Support to resolve technical product questions that come up along the way.

 What You'll Do
  • Own a defined portfolio of existing CallRail accounts, managing the full post-sale relationship.
  • Identify and close expansion and cross-sell opportunities across CallRail's product suite (e.g., Forms, Voice Assist, PCI, and additional call tracking capacity).
  • Drive account retention by proactively monitoring usage and health signals, addressing risk early, and leading renewal conversations for annual plan customers.
  • Deliver tailored product demos that show customers how additional CallRail solutions solve their business problems.
  • Partner with the Support team on more technical or complex product inquiries, ensuring customers get accurate, timely answers.
  • Build trusted, consultative relationships with key stakeholders within each account.
  • Maintain accurate forecasting and pipeline data in Salesforce, and report on key account metrics (MRR, units, back-to-base revenue).
  • Consistently meet or exceed monthly and quarterly expansion, cross-sell, and retention targets.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Sales, Customer Success, Support, and Product teams to advocate for customer needs.
 What You'll Need
  • 5+ years of sales experience, ideally in account management, customer success, or SaaS sales. Preference for marketing technology experience.
  • Proven track record of meeting or exceeding revenue, retention, or expansion targets.
  • Comfort running product demos and translating technical product details into customer-facing value.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with Support or technical teams on customer escalations.
  • Working knowledge of CRM and sales tools (Salesforce preferred, Gong, Outreach) and disciplined pipeline hygiene.
  • Self-starter who thrives on ownership of a book of business and is comfortable being measured against quota.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.

If you do not meet all the requirements listed, we still encourage you to apply! No job description is perfect, and we may also have another opportunity that aligns with your skills and experience.

 Additional Perks
  • Healthcare (one option covered at 100% for employees), Dental & Vision Coverage
  • Competitive HSA with company matching
  • Paid parental leave
  • Flexible vacation policy
  • 401K options with company dollar-for-dollar match
  • Employee stock options available from day one
  • $2,000 annual educational allowance
  • Catered lunch every Tuesday * an in-office perk
  • MARTA transportation or office parking expenses covered
  • Employee charitable donation company match, up to $500 annually
  • Regular company outings and events
  • Hybrid work options with $500 office stipend to set up your home office
  • Designated bike storage
