Essential Job Duties
We are seeking a collaborative leader with significant experience leading teams and content strategy within complex organizations. In this executive role, you will be responsible for aligning the university's storytelling ecosystem with tangible institutional and business goals; ensuring that every piece of content, from social media and internal communications to feature storytelling, serves a clear strategic purpose and reaches the right audiences with impact. This role also carries responsibility for future-proofing NC State's digital presence through next-generation search strategies, including AI and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), while strengthening how the university communicates in an evolving digital landscape.
As a key steward of the university's internal culture, overseeing Internal Communications, Editorial Strategy, and Social Media, your thoughtful and people-centered leadership will foster strong interdisciplinary partnerships, communicate with authenticity, and drive organizational progress through collaboration, strategic insight, and operational leadership.
Additionally, this role also requires extensive engagement across a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including university leadership, public officials, representatives of the UNC System and peer institutions, prospective and current students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, administrators, and members of the public. Your demonstrated ability to guide organizations through change, build trust across stakeholder groups, navigate evolving priorities with sound judgment, and create alignment around a shared vision will play a key role in advancing institutional priorities and strengthening engagement across all stakeholders.
Key responsibilities fall within the five core functional areas outlined below.
Cross-Platform Editorial Strategy & Innovation:
  • Lead a unified content strategy that aligns storytelling with institutional priorities and audience needs.
  • Advance NC State's digital presence through AI and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) strategies.
  • Create cohesive, audience-focused content across web, social, email, and print platforms.

Internal Communications & Culture Building:
  • Foster trust, transparency, and connection through strategic internal communications.
  • Strengthen employee engagement and cultivate faculty, staff, and students as brand advocates.
  • Guide executive and organizational messaging that supports an informed and connected campus community.

Social Media & Digital Engagement:
  • Oversee enterprise social media strategy focused on engagement, community growth, and relevance.
  • Lead teams in adapting to emerging digital trends and evolving audience behaviors.

Leadership & Content Operations:
  • Provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for NC State Magazine, editorial, and social media teams.
  • Establish editorial standards that reinforce brand identity, consistency, and quality.
  • Build collaborative partnerships across communications, marketing, and university leadership teams.

Collaboration & Culture
  • Collaborate and partner closely with the AVC for Brand and Integrated Strategic Operations and the AVC for Integrated Strategic Communications
  • Develops and mentors team, with a strong focus on division-wide culture

Other Responsibilities
In addition to the core responsibilities of this role, there will be opportunities to represent the division through engagement with a wide range of internal and external constituents, including university leadership, public officials, representatives from the UNC System and peer institutions, students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and members of the public. These opportunities will be assigned in collaboration with the Vice Chancellor of Communications and Marketing in support of evolving departmental and institutional priorities.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Post-baccalaureate degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field; or a Bachelor's degree with equivalent broad-based independent experience in executive-level strategic communications. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in communications, marketing or related field, with at least 5 years in leadership role(s).

Other Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated mastery in designing complex content ecosystems that span web, social, email, and multimedia, ensuring narrative consistency across all touchpoints.
  • Proven ability to use communication as a tool for culture building; specifically, the skill to craft internal narratives that drive employee engagement, trust, and organizational pride.
  • Advanced understanding of the evolving search landscape, including experience optimizing content strategies for AI-driven discovery and large language models (LLMs).
  • Expert-level storytelling and editing skills, with the ability to identify compelling narratives that align with institutional business goals (enrollment, fundraising, reputation).
  • The ability to interpret content analytics (engagement, time on page, conversion) and translate data into actionable editorial adjustments.
  • Demonstrated experience leading or supporting organizational change in complex environments, including aligning teams, communicating transitions clearly, and sustaining performance during periods of strategic or operational shift.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Understanding of the unique internal and external audiences within a university environment (tenured faculty, staff, undergraduate/graduate students, alumni, etc.).
  • Ability to lead teams through the shift from traditional print/web models to mobile-first and AI-ready content models.
  • Familiarity with modern employee engagement platforms or intranets.
  • Fluency in AP Style and editorial standards.
  • Five or more years of progressive experience leading social media strategy, ideally across multiple platforms and audience segments.
