Job description

The Atlantic is seeking an ambitious staff writer to join the newsroom. This writer will cover the media, and should have a keen interest in how the fourth estate operates right now: How the news industry is adapting to technological changes; how consolidation and closures affect the broader informational environment; how news organizations understand their responsibility to the public; and how they are positioning themselves vis-a-vis the administration. It's a role for someone who'd love to write about newspapers, Substackers, TV networks, business leaders, influencers, and all the other players in this space.

Although previous experience on this beat is not required, this staff writer will need to cultivate high-level sources at new and established outlets in pursuit of big, conversation-starting articles that will appeal to broad audiences (not just industry insiders). The ideal candidate must have a nose for a great story, excellent writing chops, a love of scoops, and the ability to blend reporting with analysis. This candidate will move fast when a story breaks, and go deep when the moment calls for it.

Qualities of a successful candidate include:

  • At least 7 years of experience in journalism.

  • A deep understanding of and enthusiasm for The Atlantic's mission and journalism

Salary minimum: 120K; Salary maximum: 180K.

This position is based in New York or Washington, D.C.

This is a Guild position.

As the third-longest-running magazine in America, we find ourselves at a remarkable moment: one of both continuation and transformation, of upholding our legacy while continuously reinventing ourselves for the future.
