Job description

Applicants must have current authorization to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

**This role requires having passed the CA Bar, no exceptions, no matter location**

The Staff Counsel drafts, reviews and files legal pleadings. This person also manages and resolves collection litigation, provides legal support for the collections litigation business unit, and interacts with outside counsel as necessary. This person provides legal advice in connection with the company's business operations and supports corporate compliance with laws and regulations governing debt collection and related activities. The Staff Counsel II may also supervise non-legal personnel within the office.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Create, review, direct and resolve collection litigation matters cost-effectively by working with business clients and legal support staff.

Maintain and enhance company reputation with courts, venders, outside counsel, and consumers. Limit company exposure through effective advocacy on behalf of the Company in hearings, trials, and mediations. Negotiate with opposing counsel, conduct discovery and respond to discovery and prepare and attend hearings and trials.

Represent client in highly contested cases, counterclaims, appeals and cross claims.

Ensure adherence to Consumer Bill of Rights by enforcing relevant company policies. Determine appropriate settlements with consumers experiencing temporary or permanent hardships and communicate with consumer and counsel to encourage financial recover.

Assist with special projects.

Provide legal advice to company to support compliance with federal, state, and local laws.

Perform other duties, as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION: Master's or Advanced FIELD OF STUDY: JD degree from an accredited law school

EXPERIENCE: 3+ years legal work experience.

CERTIFICATION(S): Juris Doctorate

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER ATTRIBUTES:

  • Strong execution skills; highly accurate in both written and verbal communication
  • Strong strategic thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills
  • Ability to make sound judgment and exercise discretion on legal matters
  • Demonstrates strong attention to detail
  • Strong business acumen

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Master's or Advanced FIELD OF STUDY: JD degree from an accredited law school

EXPERIENCE: 3+ years legal work experience

CERTIFICATION(S): Juris Doctorate

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER ATTRIBUTES:

  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Excellent with detail and analytical, accuracy and follow-through abilities
  • Experience with legal case management software
  • Experience managing or training paralegals and legal assistants

Starting Compensation

Annual Salary: $77,000.00 - $88,000.00 (Amount based on office location, relevant experience, skills, and competencies)
