What is a solar energy specialist?

Solar Energy Specialists are professionals who design, install, maintain, and optimize solar energy systems for residential, commercial, or industrial use. They assess energy needs, recommend suitable solar technologies, and ensure systems comply with regulations and safety standards. Their work helps clients reduce energy costs and environmental impact, while advancing the use of renewable energy. Solar Energy Specialists often have backgrounds in engineering, electrical work, or environmental science and stay updated with the latest solar technology advancements.

What does a solar energy specialist do?

As a solar energy specialist, you are the first point of contact for the sustainable energy business you represent. You provide customers with education and information about the technology behind renewable energy, with the goal of generating sales leads and setting appointments for consultants. Some employers require door-to-door direct sales for setting appointments and educating potential customers on the environment and the science behind solar energy. Other duties may include performing home and business engineering analysis or walkthroughs to determine energy saving opportunities and explaining energy rebates offers and the solar installation process. Some positions require you to assist with setting up displays, conduct in-store seminars and events, and handle some marketing tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solar energy specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solar Energy Specialist, you need a solid understanding of photovoltaic systems, electrical engineering principles, and renewable energy technologies, typically supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with solar design software (like PVsyst or Helioscope), electrical codes, and safety regulations is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, project management abilities, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure accurate system design, safe installation, and successful project delivery in the growing solar energy industry.

What are some common challenges solar energy specialists face when working on large-scale installation projects?

Solar Energy Specialists often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple contractors, navigating local permitting requirements, and ensuring system designs are optimized for both efficiency and cost. Weather delays and supply chain issues can also disrupt project timelines. Successful specialists proactively communicate with all stakeholders, stay updated on regulatory changes, and adapt quickly to unforeseen obstacles to keep projects on track.

Commercial Solar Interconnection Specialist
About Buffalo Solar
Buffalo Solar is a commercial solar EPC specializing in distributed generation and battery energy storage systems throughout New York. We design, engineer, and deliver commercial rooftop solar projects ranging from approximately 50 kW to 2 MW.
Position Summary
We're looking for a technically minded professional who understands commercial utility interconnection—not just project coordination.
This role owns the technical and administrative execution of utility interconnection from application through Permission to Operate (PTO). You'll work directly with utilities, engineers, AHJs, and project teams to navigate utility requirements, technical reviews, supplemental studies, protection requirements, metering configurations, and commissioning.
What You'll Do
  •  Prepare and manage utility interconnection applications for commercial solar and solar + storage projects.
  •  Review utility requirements, study comments, supplemental review requests, and technical feedback.
  •  Coordinate utility deliverables including single-line diagrams, equipment specifications, relay settings, metering details, and protection documentation.
  •  Interface directly with NYSEG, RG&E, National Grid, utilities, consulting engineers, and AHJs.
  •  Coordinate witness testing, commissioning activities, and Permission to Operate (PTO).
  •  Track project milestones while identifying technical risks before they impact construction.
  •  Continuously improve Buffalo Solar's interconnection standards, documentation, and workflows.
What We're Looking For
  •  Experience with commercial distributed generation interconnection.
  •  Working knowledge of utility application requirements and approval processes.
  •  Ability to interpret single-line diagrams, electrical plans, protection requirements, and metering configurations.
  •  Familiarity with battery energy storage systems (BESS) and their impact on utility review and controls.
  •  Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
  •  Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Preferred Experience
  •  Commercial solar projects (50 kW–2 MW).
  •  NYSEG, RG&E, National Grid, or other New York utility territories.
  •  CESIR studies, supplemental review, relay coordination, witness testing, and PTO documentation.
  •  Understanding of IEEE 1547, distributed generation interconnection standards, and utility protection philosophy.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys solving technical problems, understands electrical power systems, and wants to become an expert in utility interconnection—not someone looking for a traditional administrative project coordination role.
Buffalo Solar is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer.
