What is a residential solar consultant?

Residential Solar Consultants are professionals who help homeowners understand, select, and implement solar energy solutions for their homes. They assess the client's energy needs, evaluate the suitability of their property for solar installation, and provide recommendations on system types and financing options. Consultants also guide customers through the installation process, answer technical questions, and ensure the transition to solar energy is smooth and cost-effective.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a residential solar consultant?

To thrive as a Residential Solar Consultant, you need strong sales acumen, a foundational knowledge of solar energy systems, and typically a high school diploma or higher. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software, solar design tools, and industry certifications such as NABCEP can enhance your technical expertise. Exceptional communication, active listening, and problem-solving skills help build trust and effectively address customer needs. These skills and qualifications are crucial for accurately assessing client requirements, closing sales, and ensuring customer satisfaction in a competitive solar market.

What are some common challenges faced by residential solar consultants when working with homeowners?

Residential Solar Consultants often encounter challenges such as addressing homeowners' concerns about upfront costs, navigating local permitting and utility requirements, and explaining the long-term benefits of solar energy. Building trust with clients who may be unfamiliar with solar technology is key, and consultants must tailor solutions to fit each home's unique energy needs. Additionally, staying up-to-date with incentive programs and evolving solar products is crucial for providing accurate recommendations.

What is the difference between Residential Solar Consultant vs Solar Sales Associate?

AspectResidential Solar ConsultantSolar Sales Associate
CredentialsKnowledge of solar systems, sales experience, certifications often preferredSales experience, basic understanding of solar products beneficial
Work EnvironmentField visits, client consultations, project assessmentsOffice and field sales, client meetings
Employer & IndustrySolar installation companies, renewable energy firmsSolar product providers, energy companies

The Residential Solar Consultant and Solar Sales Associate roles both involve sales and customer interaction within the solar industry. However, the Residential Solar Consultant typically requires more technical knowledge and conducts detailed site assessments, while the Solar Sales Associate focuses more on generating leads and closing sales. Both roles are essential in promoting solar energy adoption and often share similar credentials and work environments.

How do I become a residential solar consultant?

To become a residential solar consultant, individuals typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, along with knowledge of solar energy systems and sales skills. Relevant certifications, such as NABCEP (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners), can enhance job prospects. Experience in customer service, technical understanding of solar products, and the ability to explain system benefits are also valuable for this role.

How do residential solar consultants get paid?

Residential solar consultants typically earn commissions based on the sales they generate, often receiving a percentage of the installation cost. Some may also receive a base salary or hourly wage, with additional incentives for meeting sales targets. Compensation structures can vary depending on the company and region.

Job description

Powered By The Sun – Solar Consultant Position

Commission Only  |  $0–$300K, Entirely Based on Your Effort  |  Ventura County & Los Angeles, Local Candidates Only

About Powered By The Sun

Powered By The Sun is a residential and commercial solar brokerage, focused on Ventura County and Los Angeles. As a broker, we work across multiple platform partners rather than being locked into one company's product line.

How We're Different

Most solar companies sell one product, whatever deal is active that quarter — and once the commission is collected, that's the end of the relationship. We do it differently: you work for the customer, not a quota, matching each homeowner to the platform and financing that actually fits them. That's how you build long-term client relationships and repeat referrals, instead of one-and-done transactions.

The Role & Compensation

This is a 100% commission, 1099 independent contractor positionno base, no draw, no ceiling. We're direct up front: we do not hand you leads. What we provide is real coaching, lead-generation training, and the tools to build a pipeline that's yours.

Realistic earnings range from $0 to $300,000+ annually, entirely based on what you put in. We'll be straight with you in the interview about what activity level drives what results.

What You'll Do

•       Meet with homeowners and, where relevant, commercial property owners to assess energy needs

•       Recommend the right platform, product, and financing structure for that specific customer — not a one-size-fits-all pitch

•       Build and manage your own pipeline using the lead-generation systems we train you on, including a weekly live Zoom Q&A and ready-to-use scripts

•       Present proposals, handle objections, and close — with our team supporting design, contracts, and installation coordination behind you

•       Maintain consistent communication with clients from signed contract through PTO (Permission to Operate)

Who We Want

•       Experience in commission-only sales

•       Background in home improvement, roofing, solar, or a comparable high-consideration in-home sale

•       Proven ability to generate your own pipeline — referrals, networking, door-knocking, or B2B

•       Coachable and consistent

•       Reliable transportation and a valid California driver's license

•       Local to Ventura County or Los Angeles County, or already willing and able to commute here consistently — this is not a remote role

•       HIS registration — if you don't already have one, you must be willing to obtain it. You can still generate leads and earn in the meantime, since sales close under Kerry's existing registration

•       Bilingual (English/Spanish)

None of the above are hard requirements to apply — they're what a strong fit looks like. Not required, but highly preferred.

If you're ready to sell with more tools instead of one fixed product, apply today.
