What Does a Software Development Manager Do?

As a software development manager, your primary responsibilities are to oversee software development teams and to act as a liaison between your teams and senior management. You hire and train new staff, manage and evaluate existing developers, provide guidance on the design and implementation of new software applications, and ensure that projects stay on schedule and within budget. You collaborate with upper-level management and your developers to make sure that new and existing software applications meet business objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Development Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Development Manager, you need a solid background in software engineering, leadership experience, and usually a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), version control systems (such as Git), and sometimes certifications like PMP or Scrum Master are highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to motivate and mentor teams are critical soft skills. These competencies ensure successful project delivery, foster team development, and align technical efforts with business goals.

How does a Software Development Manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

As a Software Development Manager, you’ll find that balancing hands-on technical leadership with people management is a central part of the role. You’ll spend part of your time guiding architectural decisions and overseeing code quality, while also focusing on coaching, mentoring, and supporting your team’s professional growth. Effective delegation, setting clear priorities, and maintaining open communication with both developers and stakeholders are key to managing these dual responsibilities. Many managers also work closely with product managers, QA, and other departments to ensure alignment across projects.

Job description

About AlayaCare

At AlayaCare, we're more than just a fast-growing SaaS company, we're a team of people passionate about transforming home healthcare. Our cloud-based platform empowers care providers around the world to deliver better outcomes for their clients.

With 550+ employees across Canada, the US, Australia, and Brazil, we're united by a shared mission and a strong culture of transparency, growth, and human connection. Whether you're early in your career or a seasoned expert, AlayaCare offers the opportunity to grow your impact, your skills, and your career.

About the Role

We are seeking a Manager, Software Development to join our EVV (Electronic Visit Verification), VV (Visit Verification) as well as IVR (Telephony) team; he group ensures we can reliably prove care was delivered, enabling our customers to receive payment. Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you will lead a crossfunctional team of engineers; how visits are captured and verified (mobile, web, IVR), how verified visits are transformed into compliant EVV data for states and payers and the reliability and performance of these flows at scale.

You'll be accountable for team health, technical direction, and delivery: keeping critical customer workflows stable while evolving the architecture toward more scalable, eventdriven systems.

What You'll DoPeople & Coaching
  • Coach, and develop a team of backend and fullstack engineers working on EVV, Visit Verification, and IVR.
  • Participate in the recruiting process to grow the team.
  • Provide clear expectations, regular feedback, and career development aligned with our engineering career framework.
  • Cultivate a team culture grounded in ownership, growth, and mutual trust.
Performance & Delivery
  • Drive planning, execution, and risk management for multiple workstreams in parallel (e.g., state integrations, EVV platform improvements, performance work).
  • Maintain a single, coherent view of priorities, scope, and timelines, and keep stakeholders informed.
  • Replan when reality changes: call out risks early, renegotiate scope, and avoid quiet date slips.
  • Take endtoend responsibility for reliability of EVV/VV/IVR flows, including internal SLAs for highseverity customer issues.
  • Partner with our reliability and customer teams to triage, resolve, and prevent incidents.
  • Leverage AI and emerging technologies to remove bottlenecks and accelerate execution while maintaining full accountability for quality and outcomes.
  • Encourage thoughtful experimentation that supports the team's effectiveness, articulates domain challenges with clarity and precision, and invests in innovation deliberately, balancing opportunity with operational discipline.
  • Ensure rootcause analyses are completed and lead to real followups in code, configuration, or process.
  • Partner closely with Product, Customer Success, Managed Services, and other engineering teams (e.g., Revenue Cycle Management teams, Platform, Data).
  • Turn recurring issues into shared initiatives (for example, mapping/config improvements with billing teams, better tooling with platform and data).
  • Represent the team in planning forums, status reviews, and customerfacing discussions when needed.
Technical & Operations
  • Work with senior engineers to define and evolve the architecture for:
  • Event-driven system migration.
  • Visit Verification performance (query patterns, background jobs, pagination, caching).
  • IVR call flows and their integration with the rest of the platform.
  • Review key designs and pull requests (without being the primary coder) to highlight risks and align work with longerterm goals.
  • Champion endtoend visibility for visits: from capture, through verification, into EVV exports, and on to payers and aggregators.
  • Sponsor "safety net" work (e.g., reports and tools that detect missing or duplicated visits before they impact billing).
  • Work with reliability and data teams to ensure the right monitoring, alerting, and dashboards are in place.
What You Bring to the Team
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in computer science, mathematics, or related fields.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in a SaaS environment, leading backend or fullstack teams.
  • Proven track record delivering complex projects with multiple stakeholders and dependencies.
  • Handson background as a software engineer; comfortable discussing designs, code, and tradeoffs in systems built with technologies like Python, SQL, and AWS/Kubernetes (or similar stacks).
  • Experience improving reliability: incident response, postincident review, and building the guardrails and tooling that reduce incidents over time.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills: you can coordinate several streams of work at once and keep plans and backlogs up to date.
  • Excellent communication skills - able to explain technical and domain concepts to both engineers and nontechnical stakeholders.
  • High ownership, empathy, and resilience: comfortable working in a domain with legacy systems, regulatory constraints, and partial migrations.
  • Experience in healthcare, payments, or other regulated domains where correctness and auditability matter is an asset.
  • Experience with feature flagging, modern observability tools, and CI/CD practices is an asset.
  • Familiarity with eventdriven architectures, background job systems, and filebased or APIbased integrations with external partners is an asset.
  • Exposure to EVV, Medicaid, or Revenue Cycle Management concepts is an asset.
  • Bilingual in French and English
