What does a software development manager do?

As a software development manager, your primary responsibilities are to oversee software development teams and to act as a liaison between your teams and senior management. You hire and train new staff, manage and evaluate existing developers, provide guidance on the design and implementation of new software applications, and ensure that projects stay on schedule and within budget. You collaborate with upper-level management and your developers to make sure that new and existing software applications meet business objectives.

What does a software development manager do?

A Software Development Manager oversees teams of software engineers to ensure successful planning, development, and delivery of software projects. They coordinate project timelines, allocate resources, and facilitate communication between team members and stakeholders. Additionally, they mentor developers, set technical standards, and help align software initiatives with business objectives. Their role balances technical expertise with leadership and project management responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software development manager?

To thrive as a Software Development Manager, you need a solid background in software engineering, leadership experience, and usually a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), version control systems (such as Git), and sometimes certifications like PMP or Scrum Master are highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to motivate and mentor teams are critical soft skills. These competencies ensure successful project delivery, foster team development, and align technical efforts with business goals.

How does a software development manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

As a Software Development Manager, you’ll find that balancing hands-on technical leadership with people management is a central part of the role. You’ll spend part of your time guiding architectural decisions and overseeing code quality, while also focusing on coaching, mentoring, and supporting your team’s professional growth. Effective delegation, setting clear priorities, and maintaining open communication with both developers and stakeholders are key to managing these dual responsibilities. Many managers also work closely with product managers, QA, and other departments to ensure alignment across projects.

About the role

Personal Lines is where most Canadians meet Intact. At Canada's largest provider of property and casualty insurance, our Personal Lines technology organization builds and runs the systems behind every quote, policy, change and renewal - millions of customers counting on us to be there in good times and in bad.

We are looking for a Director, Software Development to lead one of our Personal Lines value streams. You will lead several squads and the managers who run them, and you will own the outcome end to end: delivery to your business partners, the architecture and technical health of your systems, the portfolio and the investment behind it, and the growth of the people doing the work.

This is a role at the intersection of technology and people. Our ideal candidate is a selfless and passionate advocate for our teams, our customers, our success and the technological vision of our group - someone who can hold long-term direction, stakeholder delivery and individual careers in balance, and succeed in all three.

You will report directly to the Vice-President, Personal Lines, Transformation & Architecture, and join an organization of roughly 370 people alongside a peer group of Personal Lines directors. You'll have the mandate, visibility and decision authority to match the accountability - and you'll work shoulder-to-shoulder with our business partners, Intact Lab, and our Data & AI teams.

Ready to lead transformative change? Apply now if you have a proven track record of driving improvements in productivity, innovation, quality and predictability - and you want to do it at real scale.

What you will do here:

Delivery & business outcomes

  • Own end-to-end delivery for your value stream - commitments made, commitments kept - with the authority to make the calls that get us there.
  • Partner closely with your business sponsors and counterparts to turn business objectives into a clear, sequenced technology roadmap that meets future needs.
  • Define and track the metrics that matter - delivery flow, quality, reliability - and use them to keep improving, rather than to report activity.

Leading leaders

  • Contribute to a great work environment through exemplary leadership: coach and grow your managers and our emerging leaders and build the bench behind them.
  • Own talent for your value stream - hiring, development, performance and career growth - and create the psychological safety that lets people take smart risks and learn out loud.
  • Work in close collaboration with the other Personal Lines directors to raise the bar on engineering practices and keep us coherent across teams.

Architecture & technical health

  • Create and promote a long-term architectural vision for your systems that is scalable, resilient, and aligned with Intact's business needs and industry best practices.
  • Own your technical product backlog and technical health roadmap - and deliver on it, including modernizing and retiring the legacy that is holding us back.
  • Lead within our federated architecture model, where decisions sit close to the teams doing the work and coherence is earned rather than mandated.

Portfolio, priorities & investment

  • Lead portfolio management and prioritization for your value stream, in close partnership with our business groups, the IT Business Office and Finance.
  • Own the budget: build a credible plan, manage to it, and make transparent trade-offs when reality moves.
  • Say no well - protect capacity for technical health and the work that compounds, not only the work that shouts loudest.

AI in how we build

  • Drive the adoption of AI across the product development lifecycle - not only in the coding, but in how we discover, design, test, ship and support. Remove bottlenecks end to end rather than accelerating a single step.
  • Set the example others follow: use AI in your own work, make it safe and normal for your teams, and share what actually works.

Transformation & a product-centric operating model

  • Lead your part of our journey to a product-centric technology operating model - one that seamlessly integrates feature development, operations, security and reliability in the same teams.
  • Push us toward continuous delivery, with the ambition of going from idea to production in a day.
  • Collaborate across departments - Operations, planning, Tech and Intact Lab - to break silos and align technology goals with overall corporate objectives.

Trust, resilience & compliance

  • Keep the systems Canadians depend on stable, secure and available - with a serious approach to observability, incident response and operational discipline.
  • Build regulatory and compliance requirements into how your teams work rather than bolting them on, and partner with security and compliance to mitigate risk.

What you bring to the table:

  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in a management position at a Director level, including managing managers in a software engineering organization and leading transformation.
  • In-depth knowledge of software engineering principles, processes and practices - and the credibility to hold a real technical conversation with your best engineers.
  • A track record of leading change that moved the needle on productivity, quality, predictability and delivery flow.
  • Hands-on familiarity with driving AI into how teams design, build, test and ship.
  • Strong skills in critical thinking, decision-making and problem solving, with attention to detail - and the judgment to know when detail matters.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management - the ability to influence, negotiate and build genuine consensus across business and technology.
  • A strong overall technologist who has a passion for learning and growing every day.
  • A strong ambassador of Intact's Values and Leadership Success Factors.
  • For candidates located in Quebec, bilingualism (French / English) is required - Need to interact on a regular basis with colleagues across the country.
  • No Canadian work experience required however must be eligible to work in Canada.
