Job description

Job Title: Sample Management Technician
Job Description

The Sample Management Technician plays a key role in supporting scientific research by carefully handling, processing, and storing irreplaceable biological samples. This position focuses on receiving, inspecting, and routing client specimens while maintaining strict control over sample integrity and documentation. You will work with inventory management systems, support multiple sample management departments, and help ensure that all samples remain viable and traceable throughout their lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Handle, process, and store irreplaceable biological samples in accordance with established procedures to support scientific research.
  • Ensure all samples are maintained in the appropriate environment during handling, processing, and storage to preserve their biological viability.
  • Receive inbound shipments of biological samples and track them prior to registration.
  • Register incoming samples into various inventory management systems accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Retrieve samples from storage and package and ship them to various global testing laboratories following applicable procedures.
  • Retrieve samples from storage and complete sample disposal processes as requested.
  • Perform de-identification procedures on samples to remove traceability to individual patients while maintaining required documentation.
  • Perform aliquoting procedures on samples as needed to support downstream testing and research activities.
  • Consolidate samples in storage as needed to optimize space and maintain organized inventory.
  • Support other sample management departments on the broader campus by assisting with shared workflows and priorities.
  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures and follow all departmental and inter-departmental standard operating procedures (SOPs) as written.
  • Apply good laboratory practice principles when working with samples, equipment, and documentation.
  • Use labeling, inventory, and quality management systems (including SAP and QMS tools) to maintain accurate sample records.
  • Participate in sample preparation, storage, and specimen management activities in laboratory, blood bank, biobank, or warehouse-type environments.
  • Meet daily productivity metrics related to sample pulling, processing, and data entry while maintaining high quality standards.
Essential Skills
  • High school diploma or GED completion.
  • At least 1 year of sample management or warehouse experience.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to work efficiently and accurately.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team setting.
  • Ability to lift 30+ pounds and safely handle dry ice.
  • Proficiency with computers, including use of Microsoft Office or similar software.
  • Experience with sample management, specimen processing, and specimen storage.
  • Ability to follow written SOPs and adhere to good laboratory practice (GLP) principles.
  • Comfort working in environments involving biological samples, laboratories, blood banks, biobanks, or warehouse operations.
  • Ability to use labeling and inventory tools to track and manage samples.
  • Capability to work in a fast-paced environment while handling high sample volumes.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in a life science discipline.
  • Prior experience in a biobank or similar sample management environment.
  • Experience working with industrial freezers and dry ice for sample storage.
  • Familiarity with data entry and tracking processes within inventory or laboratory systems.
  • Experience using SAP or similar enterprise resource planning systems.
  • Exposure to quality management systems (QMS) in a laboratory or regulated environment.
  • Background in sample preparation, sample storage, and specimen management across different laboratory or warehouse settings.
Work Environment

This role operates in a fast-paced sample management environment where you will process and pull approximately 800–1000 samples per day. Work is primarily performed while standing and walking, with regular movement between storage areas, workstations, and shipping or disposal areas. You will work with sub-zero freezers and dry ice for sample storage, requiring comfort in cold environments and safe handling of temperature-controlled materials. The position combines independent work with collaborative tasks, and you will be expected to meet defined productivity metrics during each shift while coordinating with team members and leadership as needed. You will have opportunities to sit during data entry and system updates, but the majority of the day involves physical activity, including lifting and moving sample containers within a laboratory, biobank, or warehouse-style facility.
