Job description

As an Equipment Design Engineer, you will be responsible for developing fully automated production tooling as well as making continuous improvements to our pre-existing equipment for the manufacturing of electrical systems within vehicles and other electrical platforms. This role will involve rapid, efficient responses to real-time issues, and then driving permanent resolutions and improvements in collaboration with our process and operations staff, as well as driving continuous improvement of our preventative maintenance programs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test, and launch production equipment within our US-based manufacturing facilities.
  • Create technical documentation, including but not limited to:
    • Detailed part/assembly drawings
    • Product specifications
    • BOMs
    • Technical reports/analysis.
  • Drive research to identify optimal materials and technologies to ensure a cost-effective and user-friendly solution.
  • Support troubleshooting and RCA for equipment-related issues during design, installation, and operation.
  • Generate cost estimates for equipment, labor, and materials within an equipment design.
  • Systematically apply knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and software components to identify and solve problems.
  • Work closely with Equipment Engineers, Process Engineers, and Operators to meet equipment requirements and improve existing systems.
  • Work hands-on with roll-to-roll web handling and processing equipment, including rollers, drives, edge guides, brakes, and steering mechanisms.

Experience/Education
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial Engineering (or a similar focus).
  • Hands-on experience as an Equipment Design Engineer, Mechanical/Electrical Engineer, or similar experience.
  • Experience with design, assembly, and/or maintenance of automated manufacturing equipment strongly preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Independent problem solver with a desire to learn new skills and develop new technology.
  • Strong organizational skills and a detail-oriented mindset.
  • Able to adapt to changing requirements in a fast-paced start-up setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong work ethic, and ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to use hand and machine tools safely.

A qualified candidate will have a subset of these skills
  • Extensive background in using SolidWorks or similar.
  • Experience using PLC and device configuration software.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles.
  • Experience developing discrete simulation models.
  • Experience with extracting and analyzing manufacturing data.
  • Experience with assembly and/or maintenance of roll-to-roll manufacturing equipment.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. Work Environment -
Includes both a typical office environment, with minimal exposure to excessive noise or adverse environmental issues, and a shop environment, with exposure to high noise levels from operating machines, physical hazards from moving equipment and machine parts, nuisance dust, and skin exposure to chemicals used to run/maintain machines.
PPE-
May be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment, including but not limited to safety glasses, safety shoes, bump-caps, gloves, hair nets, masks, & clean-room frocks while adhering to the prescribed safety procedures.
