Essential Job Duties
This position is an integral part of the Department of Agricultural and Human Sciences' professional faculty and staff at North Carolina State University. This position interfaces with statewide, district, and county Cooperative Extension staff and volunteers, as well as other state and community-based organizations. The Healthy Retail Sector Extension Associate provides expertise and facilitates Policy, Systems, and Environmental (PSE) interventions, as well as strategies that focus on opportunities to support healthy nutrition and physical activity behaviors within the retail setting. The position works under the guidance and supervision of the Lead Food and Built Environments Extension Associate.
Essential job duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Review healthy retail existing evidence and best practices for food-based nutrition education, active living, and PSE interventions and guide Steps to Health strategies.
  • Provides information on promising and best practice prevention strategies in retail settings for community and statewide plans and programs.
  • Lead the NC SNAC Healthy Retail Designation Program workgroup including planning and facilitating the meetings, collecting feedback on the Healthy Retail Designation Program, and providing updates to the larger NC SNAC group.
  • Update the NC SNAC Healthy Retail Designation Program page and interactive map.
  • Manage the statewide Healthy Retail Designation Program including review of new retail applications, reassessments, random yearly audits, and database management.
  • Assist the Lead Food and Built Environments Extension Associate to adapt and develop and/or selection of program and evaluation tools, materials, processes, and protocols for Steps to Health healthy retail work.
  • Work with Extension Specialists and the Lead Food and Built Environments Extension Associate to coordinate program goals, strategies, interventions, implementation, and evaluation activities, including developing needs assessments, surveys, and measurable program objectives; and coordinating data requirements, data gathering, and analysis.
  • Develop and conduct training and related materials for healthy retail interventions.
  • Identify new opportunities for engagement in environments-based nutrition education in retail settings across the state.
  • Work with County Cooperative Extension Agents to plan program implementation and modify program delivery strategies as needed for retail settings using The Essentials of a Healthy Food Retail Store toolkit and material. This will include phone calls, emails, web-based technologies, and in-person visits to ensure appropriate and successful healthy retail program implementation and modify program delivery strategies as needed.
  • Work with community, state, and national agencies, organizations, and coalitions on PSE change interventions and strategies related to food and built environments and support of strategies, evaluation, and impact around nutrition education in retail settings.
  • Travel within the state, including occasional overnight stays for county visits.
  • Oversee the monitoring, surveillance, and evaluation of healthy retail program activities to ensure compliance with the grant and fiscal requirements.
  • Prepares reports, plans, and other documents on healthy retail programs and issues to meet Steps to Health objectives, citing data, benchmarks, and measurable outcomes.
