What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Lawyer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Lawyer, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, bar licensure, and strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills. Familiarity with digital document management systems, virtual meeting platforms, and legal research databases such as Westlaw or LexisNexis is typically required. Exceptional time management, self-motivation, and clear virtual communication skills help remote lawyers excel in collaborating with clients and teams from a distance. These competencies ensure effective legal service delivery, client satisfaction, and productivity in a remote work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in remote law positions?

Professionals in remote law roles often face challenges such as maintaining clear communication with clients and colleagues, managing confidential documents securely, and balancing work-life boundaries without the structure of a traditional office. Additionally, staying updated on jurisdictional legal requirements and collaborating across time zones can require extra diligence and organization. Many firms address these challenges by using secure legal tech platforms, setting clear expectations for virtual meetings, and encouraging regular check-ins among team members.

What is remote law and what does a remote lawyer do?

Remote law refers to the practice of legal work outside of a traditional office environment, often from home or another remote location. A remote lawyer provides legal services such as consultation, document drafting, legal research, and even court representation using digital tools like email, video conferencing, and secure online platforms. This setup allows for greater flexibility and can help lawyers serve clients from various locations efficiently. Remote law is becoming more popular as technology advances and clients seek more accessible legal services.

Job description

Family Law Attorney โ€“ Minneapolis, MN (Fully Remote) $10,000 Hiring Bonus Available

Atticus Family Law is looking for a Family Law Attorney who wants to build a strong career in family law without sacrificing support, structure, or balance.

We have spent more than 20 years helping clients navigate divorce, custody, parenting time, and the other transitions that change people's lives. Our fully remote team serves clients in the Minneapolis area, backed by proven systems that let attorneys focus on meaningful legal work rather than administrative noise.

This is a role for an attorney with at least two years of Minnesota family law experience who is ready to grow. You will work alongside a team that takes mentorship seriously, values honest collaboration, and holds itself to a high standard โ€” for clients and for each other.

What you bring

  • 2+ years of Minnesota family law experience
  • Strong client advocacy skills and the ability to balance strategy with empathy
  • A collaborative, team-oriented mindset and a commitment to ongoing growth

What we offer

  • $10,000 hiring bonus
  • Fully remote flexibility with real work-life integration
  • Proven workflows and systems that support attorney success
  • Mentorship and professional development from day one
  • A culture grounded in accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement

If you are ready to do great work inside a firm that is structured, supportive, and purpose-driven, we would love to connect.

Compensation:

$100,000+ annually including salary & performance-based incentives

Responsibilities:

What Youโ€™ll Do

  • Manage a full caseload of family law matters from start to finish. Oversee cases from intake through resolution, ensuring deadlines are met and client needs are consistently addressed.
  • Handle all phases of litigation and case development. Prepare motions, affidavits, legal arguments, and trial materials that support strong, strategic outcomes.
  • Represent clients in hearings, mediations, and ADR proceedings. Advocate with professionalism and confidence in both formal and informal settings.
  • Advise clients on strategy and next steps. Provide practical, tailored guidance that empowers clients to make informed decisions.
  • Maintain clear, proactive communication. Keep clients informed on case progress while effectively managing communication with opposing counsel and other stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with paralegals and legal staff. Work closely with a supportive team to ensure thorough preparation and efficient case management.
  • Conduct legal research and stay current on Minnesota family law. Apply relevant statutes and case law while anticipating changes that may impact your cases.
  • Uphold the highest ethical and professional standards. Protect client confidentiality and maintain integrity in all aspects of your work.
  • Keep cases organized and moving forward. Utilize firm systems to track progress, manage tasks, and ensure matters advance efficiently.

Qualifications:
  • Licensed and in good standing with the Minnesota Bar.
  • 2+ years of experience in family law, with familiarity with MN procedures.
  • Detail-oriented and dependableโ€”youโ€™ll have strong systems and paralegal support behind you.
  • Skilled in clear, professional communication with clients, courts, and colleagues.
  • Able to manage multiple cases with structure and efficiencyโ€”our team handles intake, billing, and admin, so you can focus on your legal work.
  • Comfortable using legal and case management technologyโ€”we provide Clio, MS Office, Westlaw, and more to streamline your day.
  • Collaborative and open to feedbackโ€”we work as a team, not in silos.
  • Committed to client experienceโ€”our attorneys guide clients with compassion and professionalism at every step.
