Ehlers Accounting & Tax Services is seeking an experienced Tax Preparer / Staff Accountant to join our team in Lincoln, Nebraska.
We are a small, established accounting firm serving business and individual clients throughout the area. We are looking for a motivated accounting professional who enjoys solving problems, working independently, and taking ownership of client projects from start to finish.
This position is being added to help balance workloads, increase firm capacity, and ensure our team can continue providing exceptional service to our clients while maintaining a sustainable work environment.

What You’ll Do
- Prepare S-Corporation, Partnership and individual income tax returns
- Analyze financial statements, trial balances, and supporting documentation
- Prepare financial statements and related workpapers
- Prepare depreciation schedules
- Identify discrepancies, missing information, and potential tax issues
- Perform bookkeeping cleanup and adjusting journal entries when needed
- Communicate with clients to gather information and resolve questions
- Research tax and accounting issues independently
- Assist with process improvement and documentation
- Develop proficiency in firm software and technology systems
- Prepare payroll tax forms and payroll tax returns
- Cross-train in other areas of the firm as business needs evolve
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of experience preparing both business and individual income tax returns
- Experience preparing S-Corporation and Partnership tax returns
- Strong Excel and Word skills
- Ability to prepare tax returns from trial balances and financial statements
- Experience with bookkeeping cleanup and adjusting entries
- Strong technology and software skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects
- Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications
- 3+ years of public accounting experience
- Experience with Thomson Reuters software products, including UltraTax CS, Accounting CS, Fixed Assets CS, FileCabinet CS, or similar professional tax and accounting software
- Experience working with QuickBooks Online and/or QuickBooks Desktop
- Experience preparing financial statements, depreciation schedules, and payroll tax filings
Technology & Software
We utilize a fully integrated Thomson Reuters professional suite, including:
- UltraTax CS
- Accounting CS
- Fixed Assets CS
- FileCabinet CS
- SafeSend
Our clients utilize a variety of bookkeeping systems, including QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop, and staff are expected to be comfortable working with client accounting data from multiple platforms.
Experience with Thomson Reuters products is preferred but not required. Candidates should be comfortable learning and utilizing new technology systems.

What Success Looks Like
Within your first year, you will:
- Manage tax projects from start to finish with minimal supervision
- Identify issues and missing information proactively

- Become a trusted resource for both tax and accounting projects
- Take increasing ownership of client engagements
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range of $60,000 - $70,000 based on experience
- Paid Time Off begins accruing immediately upon hire
- 401(k) plan available after one year of service
- Nine paid holidays annually, including:
- New Year’s Day
- Memorial Day & Friday before Memorial Day
- Independence Day (July 4th)
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day & Friday after Thanksgiving
- Christmas Day
- Paid half-days on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve
- Year-round, full-time employment
Work Schedule & Work-Life Balance
We believe excellent client service starts with a well-supported team and sustainable workloads. This in an in-office position with the following hours:
- January-May (Tax Season): Mon - Fri: 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM
- June-December: Mon -Thurs: 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM; Friday: 8:30 AM – 3:00 PM
Unlike many public accounting firms, staff are generally not expected to work more than 45 hours per week during tax season. We value efficiency, organization, and planning rather than excessive overtime.
