How much do project controller jobs pay per year?
What is the difference between Project Controller vs Project Coordinator?
| Aspect | Project Controller | Project Coordinator |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Role | Financial oversight, budgeting, and project cost control | Assists with project scheduling, communication, and administrative tasks |
| Required Skills | Financial analysis, project management software, budgeting | Communication, organization, basic project management |
| Work Environment | Construction sites, engineering firms, large projects | Office settings, project teams, administrative support |
| Certifications | PMI-SP, CAPM, or similar financial/project management certifications | None typically required, but PMP or CAPM can be beneficial |
The Project Controller focuses on financial management and cost control within projects, ensuring budgets are maintained. In contrast, the Project Coordinator handles administrative tasks, scheduling, and communication to support project execution. Both roles are essential but differ mainly in their focus areas and responsibilities.
How does a project controller typically interact with project managers and other team members during a project's lifecycle?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project controller, and why are they important?
What is a project controller?
A project controller is a member of a project management team that focuses on the financial health of a project. As a project controller, you work for consulting firms that provide management services related to information technology or human resources projects. You often interact directly with the project manager to define goals, and with clients to review project pricing and financial budget reports. Your job duties also include analyzing progress reports and monitoring the schedule to help ensure the effort is finished on time and under budget. On top of communication skills, having the ability to analyze financial aspects such as cost, revenue, and risk is crucial to your job as a project controller. Although a wide range of qualifications is common for this career, most project controllers have a graduate degree in business, accounting, or finance. Experience as a consultant or accountant is also typical.

With an expansive infrastructure network spanning Western Canada and North Dakota, we deliver essential solutions where they are needed most. Our partnerships focus on safely recovering oil and metals, disposing of liquid and solid waste, recycling materials such as metals, water, and oil, and reclaiming contaminated land to reduce environmental footprints.
SECURE is committed to innovation, helping our customers lower costs, reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and exceed their business, safety, and environmental goals. We go beyond expectations — mitigating risks, reducing financial obligations, and maximizing value for our clients.
Join SECURE and be part of a team that steps up to make a meaningful difference in the industries we serve and the world we share
As a Well Operations Engineer, you'll play a key role in supporting the planning, performance, and optimization of SECURE's well operations. Working alongside experienced technical and operational professionals, you'll apply engineering principles, analyze well performance, support regulatory initiatives, and contribute to projects that improve operational efficiency, cost performance, and long-term asset value. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer to gain broad exposure across well operations while building technical expertise in a dynamic and growing business.
Ideal for engineers looking to build their technical expertise while gaining hands-on experience supporting well operations and optimization projects.
This role is based in Calgary, Alberta
You'll join a collaborative, knowledgeable team that values open communication, continuous learning, and shared success. Working closely with operations, regulatory, finance, and technical specialists, you'll contribute to meaningful work while learning from experienced professionals across the business.
This role is primarily office-based with opportunities to visit field operations and gain firsthand exposure to well activities. In our fast-paced environment, you'll balance analytical work with cross-functional collaboration, supporting projects that help deliver safe, reliable, and efficient operational outcomes.
- Provide technical support to the Well Operations team in well planning, well monitoring, performance analysis, and well optimization initiatives
- Support performance improvement through operational planning, data analysis, and post-operation reviews
- Review historical well performance data to identify optimization opportunities; assist with optimization planning, execution planning, and project management of well optimization activities
- Assist the Project Controller in the preparation, tracking, and accuracy of well budgets, forecasts, and operational costs, including timely submission of monthly well expenditures
- Develop and maintain accurate project cost tracking and reporting for both existing and development wells
- Support SECURE’s regulatory programs, including disposal scheme applications (D51), regulatory operational planning, compliance tracking, and regulatory submissions
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date well files, operational records, and supporting documentation
- Coordinate with internal teams (operations, regulatory, and finance) to ensure alignment of well information, costs, and schedules
- Provide general analytical and administrative support to the Well Operations team as required
- A recent engineering degree from an accredited program
- 2–4 years of industry experience considered an asset
- Strong ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with operations, regulatory, finance, and other cross-functional teams
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
- Willingness and ability to travel to field locations as required
At SECURE, we focus on opportunities for growth and improvement; for our employees, our customers, our partners, and the communities we operate in. We are an energetic team, driven by the needs of our customers, and we care about making a meaningful contribution. We strive to attract, retain, and motivate employees by offering a competitive compensation package that recognizes employee contributions and performance.
In addition to rewarding job opportunities, we offer:
- Competitive industry wages and compensation programs which include:
- Employer-paid benefits: health, dental & more
- Health Care Spending Account

- Career progression
- A competitive employee referral program
