Senior Project Controller information

What is a senior project controller?

Senior Project Controllers are experienced professionals responsible for overseeing and managing the financial and scheduling aspects of large projects within an organization. They monitor project budgets, track expenses, analyze project performance data, and ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget. Additionally, they provide detailed reports to stakeholders, identify potential risks, and recommend corrective actions to keep projects on track. Their role is crucial in ensuring efficient resource allocation and successful project delivery.

How does a senior project controller typically interact with project managers and other stakeholders during a project's lifecycle?

A Senior Project Controller works closely with project managers, finance teams, and other stakeholders to ensure projects remain on schedule and within budget. Regular meetings are held to review progress, address risks, and update forecasts. The Senior Project Controller provides detailed cost analysis, schedule updates, and variance reports, enabling informed decision-making. Collaboration and clear communication are essential, as the role often requires translating complex financial data into actionable insights for non-financial team members.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior project controller?

To thrive as a Senior Project Controller, you need strong analytical skills, expertise in budgeting and forecasting, and a relevant degree in finance, accounting, or engineering. Familiarity with project management software (like Primavera or MS Project), ERP systems, and certifications such as PMP or CCP are highly valued. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and the ability to problem-solve under pressure distinguish top professionals in this role. These skills ensure accurate project tracking, risk management, and successful delivery of projects within time and budget constraints.

Job description

At Phasor, we're focused on the big picture and the small details.

As a wholly owned subsidiary of Quanta Services, we provide engineering and design services across transmission & distribution, substations, protection & control, geomatics, civil & structural design, telecommunications, panel fabrication, and the testing and commissioning of medium and high-voltage electrical infrastructure.

Be part of a team that delivers projects from conceptual engineering and detailed design through construction support, commissioning, and startup. Built on technical excellence, collaboration, and a commitment to safety and quality, we take on complex challenges together.

The Opportunity

We're looking for an experienced Senior Project Scheduler to join our Project Controls team in Calgary, AB.

In this role, you will develop and maintain resource-loaded project schedules while supporting planning, forecasting, and project controls across a diverse portfolio of utility and infrastructure projects. You'll work closely with Project Managers, Project Controllers, Estimators, and divisional leaders to deliver accurate schedules, optimize resource planning, and support successful project execution.

If you enjoy building schedules that drive decision-making, balancing priorities across multiple projects, and contributing to complex EPC and capital projects, this role offers meaningful work, collaboration, and opportunities for long-term professional growth.

What You'll Do
  • Develop, baseline, and maintain detailed CPM schedules using Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project from project kickoff through closeout
  • Build resource-loaded schedules and analyze labour, equipment, and subcontractor demand across multiple concurrent projects
  • Define work breakdown structures (WBS), schedule logic, and critical paths aligned with project scope and Phasor's project controls framework
  • Perform schedule updates, prepare schedule narratives, variance analyses, and look-ahead reports for internal and client reporting
  • Assess schedule impacts resulting from scope changes, delays, and project risks, including Time Impact Analyses (TIAs) where required
  • Support earned value management by maintaining schedule data and collaborating with Project Controllers on project performance reporting
  • Coordinate with Project Managers, Estimators, Project Controllers, and divisional leadership to support project planning and resource forecasting
  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of scheduling standards, templates, and project controls processes
  • Participate in project handovers, schedule reviews, and PMO planning sessions
  • Mentor Project Controllers and support scheduling best practices across the organization
What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years of hands-on scheduling experience supporting capital, EPC, or complex infrastructure projects
  • Advanced proficiency with Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project, including resource loading, baseline management, and critical path analysis
  • Strong understanding of CPM scheduling principles, WBS development, float management, and schedule change analysis
  • Experience developing resource-loaded schedules and supporting organizational resource planning across multiple projects
  • Experience preparing or supporting Time Impact Analyses (TIAs) and schedule delay analysis
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain scheduling concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience in electrical, substation, transmission, or heavy civil/industrial construction is preferred
  • Familiarity with earned value management (SPI, CPI, PMB) and project cost reporting is considered an asset
  • Post-secondary education in engineering technology, construction management, or a related discipline
  • PSP (Planning & Scheduling Professional), PMP, or experience with InEight Control or similar project management platforms is considered an asset
