Position Summary
This posting has been established to create a pool of qualified part-time instructors within the Continuing Education/Workforce Development Division to support current and potential future instructional opportunities at the Martin Community College Main and/or Bertie Campuses. The College will evaluate available skill sets and develop classes based on workforce demand, community interest, and College needs.
Continuing Education/Workforce Development: Overview
Continuing Education/Workforce Development provides short-term, non-degree instructional and learning opportunities that support workforce development, career readiness, professional skill enhancement, and lifelong learning for the community. Offerings are developed based on local workforce demand, industry partnerships, community interest, and economic development needs.
Continuing Education/Workforce Development: Instructional Areas
Instructional areas for which the Continuing Education/Workforce Development Division is currently seeking instructor applicant pools include, but are not limited to:
Occupational and Workforce Training:Designed to prepare individuals for employment, career advancement, or industry-recognized credentials. These offerings may include technical, healthcare support, business, technology, skilled trades, transportation, agricultural, or other workforce-related training areas.
Related topics may include, but are not limited to, courses such as welding, forklift operation, commercial vehicle inspection, OSHA workplace safety, industrial maintenance, construction trades fundamentals, CDL preparation, manufacturing production and quality control, blueprint reading, heavy equipment operation, agricultural equipment operation and safety, pesticide applicator preparation, medical office support, IT support fundamentals, cybersecurity awareness, business software applications, warehouse and logistics operations, customer service workforce training, and hospitality or food service workforce training.
Human Resources Development (HRD): Focuses on employability and workforce readiness skills for individuals seeking employment, career transition, or skill improvement. Topics may include job search strategies, workplace communication, digital literacy, and career exploration.
Personal Enrichment, Professional Development, and Community Education: These offerings support lifelong learning, personal development, and community engagement and may include topics such as arts and crafts, yoga and wellness, gardening, home improvement, horse riding, technology for personal use, music, financial literacy, line dancing, photography, defensive driving, cake decorating, firearm safety, drone operation, upholstery, and other special interest areas.
POOLING NOTICE
Part-time instructors are employed on an hourly, as-needed basis. Submission of an application does not guarantee employment and is not intended to imply that instructional opportunities currently exist. Part-time instructional assignments are contingent upon the needs of the College and course availability. These roles are temporary in nature.
This posting is also intended to help the College identify available instructional talent and skill sets within the community. By submitting an application, applicants are providing information regarding their qualifications, experience, and areas of instructional interest for consideration for current and potential future opportunities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare and teach assigned courses in accordance with approved course outlines, learning objectives, and instructional standards.
- Maintain accurate registration, attendance, and payroll documentation for each course taught.
- Prepare, review, and update course materials, lesson plans, and instructional content on a regular basis.
- Recommend and assist with course and instructional content revisions, as appropriate.
- Use formative and summative assessment methods to support student learning and improve instructional effectiveness.
- Create and maintain an effective learning environment using teaching strategies designed to support a variety of learning styles and skill levels.
- Submit required reports and fulfill all contractual and instructional responsibilities.
- Maintain classroom, laboratory, shop, or instructional space environments that emphasize safety, organization, and equipment security, as applicable.
- Maintain student, instructor, and staff confidentiality and protect sensitive information in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and College requirements.
- Demonstrate the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time effectively.
- Adapt to changing work situations, instructional formats, and environments in a positive and professional manner.
- Participate in professional development activities designed to enhance instructional effectiveness, job skills, and subject matter knowledge, as appropriate.
- Interact with students, the public, community partners, and College personnel in a cooperative, courteous, and professional manner.
- Maintain accurate student performance and attendance records and submit required documentation and reports in accordance with College and program requirements.
- Communicate with students regarding course expectations, attendance, and performance as appropriate.
- Hold student conferences or provide instructional support as needed.
- Support and accommodate students in coordination with College support services, as applicable.
- Complete all required institutional training, including but not limited to FERPA, Title IX, and Campus Safety.
- Respond to student concerns professionally and report unresolved issues or classroom incidents to the immediate supervisor.
- Comply with all College and division policies, procedures, and instructional guidelines.
- Perform other related instructional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
Education/Experience Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED or HSE).
- Demonstrated subject matter expertise in the instructional area through one or more of the following:
- Relevant work and/or personal experience
- Industry training or certifications
- Formal education or technical training
- Ability to effectively communicate and instruct adult learners.
- Basic computer skills and ability to utilize instructional technology, email, and learning platforms, as applicable.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and complete required documentation.
