What is a productivity engineer?

Productivity Engineers are professionals who focus on optimizing processes, workflows, and systems within an organization to enhance efficiency and output. They use a combination of engineering principles, data analysis, and technology to identify bottlenecks and recommend improvements. Their work often involves automating repetitive tasks, implementing new tools or software, and collaborating with different teams to streamline operations. Ultimately, Productivity Engineers help companies achieve better results with fewer resources, saving time and costs.

How does a productivity engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive process improvements?

Productivity Engineers often work closely with departments such as operations, quality assurance, and supply chain to analyze workflows and identify areas for efficiency gains. They facilitate meetings, gather feedback from various stakeholders, and use data-driven approaches to recommend process optimizations. Strong communication and project management skills are essential, as Productivity Engineers must translate technical solutions into actionable plans across diverse teams. This collaborative approach ensures that improvements are practical, sustainable, and aligned with organizational goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a productivity engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Productivity Engineer, you need strong analytical skills, knowledge of process improvement methodologies (such as Lean or Six Sigma), and typically a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with data analysis tools, workflow management systems, and certifications like Lean Six Sigma or PMP are commonly required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, communication, and collaboration skills help you drive change and influence teams effectively. These competencies are crucial for identifying inefficiencies, implementing solutions, and achieving measurable productivity gains in organizational processes.

What is the difference between Productivity Engineer vs Process Improvement Specialist?

While both roles focus on improving efficiency, a Productivity Engineer primarily develops systems and tools to enhance overall productivity, often in technical or engineering environments. A Process Improvement Specialist concentrates on analyzing and refining existing processes to increase efficiency within organizations. Both roles require similar certifications and often overlap in industries, but their core focus and daily tasks differ slightly.

Business Area
Engineering and CTO
Ref #
10050679
Description & Requirements
Our Team
Bloomberg's Workplace Productivity team builds internal solutions across Microsoft 365/Azure and Google Workspace for over 25,000 employees. We partner closely with the product team in discovering the real problem from the businesses, shaping the approach, and delivering production-ready solutions.
The Role
As a member of the Workplace Productivity team, you'll be part builder, part platform explorer, and part trusted advisor: you'll help turn the "latest and greatest" capabilities from Microsoft and Google into secure, governed solutions that internal teams can rely on. Because these technologies evolve quickly, we focus on adopting new features responsibly - establishing, where appropriate, governance and lifecycle management to ensure long-term reliability, security, and alignment with internal standards.
You'll need to have
• 5+ years of experience in software development, specializing in building production services and automation solutions using C#, Python and PowerShell.
• A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
We would love to see
• Understanding of latest AI tooling and working knowledge on governance models
• Experience understanding and applying governance for AI agents, including oversight of Model Context Protocol (MCP), security, and compliance controls
• Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365 certifications, such as Azure Solutions Architect Expert and Microsoft 365 Administrator Expert, or equivalent credentials demonstrating advanced cloud and enterprise administration expertise
• Security Certifications - SANS or similar
• Google Workspace Administration experience/certifications
• Deep understanding of Microsoft 365 services and how to utilize, manage, secure them at enterprise scale
• Strong proficiency in Azure Entra ID, including understanding its dependencies related to identity and access security, as well as features like Conditional Access, Defender for O365 etc.
• Demonstrated success in delivering data protection and compliance solutions for financial institutions by designing DLP policies and integrating Microsoft 365 and/or Google Workspace with third-party security systems
• Familiarity with security posture improvements and hardening concepts in cloud environments (e.g., least privilege, logging/monitoring/auditing).
• Experience designing and operating web and Windows services that integrate with other internal systems and platforms
• Demonstrated experience managing DevOps pipelines, leveraging GitHub for configuration-as-code, and enabling automated, scalable deployments
• Experience across all phases of the software development life cycle, including design, implementation, testing, deployment, and operational support
Salary Range = 160,000 - 240,000 USD Annual + Benefits + Bonus
The referenced salary range is based on the Company's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level.
We offer one of the most comprehensive and generous benefits plans available and offer a range of total rewards that may include merit increases, incentive compensation (exempt roles only), paid holidays, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, short and long term disability benefits, 401(k) +match, life insurance, and various wellness programs, among others.
