Production Operations Engineers focus on optimizing and maintaining manufacturing processes to ensure efficient production, while Manufacturing Engineers primarily design and improve manufacturing systems. Both roles require similar technical skills and often work in manufacturing environments, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

What are Production Operations Engineers?

Production Operations Engineers are professionals who oversee and optimize the processes involved in manufacturing or service delivery to ensure efficient, reliable, and safe operations. They monitor production systems, troubleshoot issues, implement improvements, and coordinate with other teams to maintain seamless workflow. Their role often includes maintaining equipment, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and using data analytics to enhance productivity and minimize downtime.

What are some common challenges faced by Production Operations Engineers, and how can they prepare to address them?

Production Operations Engineers often encounter challenges such as responding to unexpected system outages, balancing multiple priorities during high-pressure incidents, and ensuring seamless coordination with development and IT teams. To address these, it's helpful to develop strong troubleshooting skills, maintain clear documentation, and practice effective communication across departments. Proactively learning about the organization's infrastructure and staying updated on best practices can also help engineers respond efficiently to operational issues and contribute to continuous process improvements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Production Operations Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Production Operations Engineer, you need strong problem-solving skills, a solid understanding of production processes, and a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with manufacturing execution systems (MES), automation tools, and lean manufacturing certifications like Six Sigma are typically beneficial. Excellent teamwork, communication, and analytical thinking help you collaborate effectively and quickly address production challenges. These skills ensure efficient operations, minimize downtime, and drive continuous improvement in production environments.

What does a production operations engineer do?

A production operations engineer oversees the manufacturing or production process to ensure efficiency, quality, and safety. They analyze workflows, troubleshoot issues, and implement improvements, often using tools like data analysis and process automation. This role typically requires technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and knowledge of industry standards.

Job description

The Roleย

Building satellites at highย rate is a coordination challenge unlike any other. It demands sharp forecasting, real-time visibility into production, and the ability to adapt as targets evolve. The Vehicle Operations team sits at the center of it all, connecting engineering and manufacturing to keep programs moving.ย

In this role,ย you'llย design and build the tools that turn production data into clear, actionable insight, giving teams across the program the confidence to make strategic decisions quickly. If you thrive at the intersection of systems thinking, data, and operations, this is your chance to shape how we buildย

Responsibilitiesย

  • Design analytical tools to evaluate delivery timelines, production capacity, manufacturing processes, and supply chain constraints, to support informed decision-makingย
  • Lead the development and execution of production schedules and output targets acrossย programsย
  • Partner closely with engineering and manufacturing teamsย on a daily basisย to ensure alignment with validated milestone plansย
  • Contribute to team efforts to shape and execute strategies that reduce production and launch risks while capturing opportunities to enhance quality, throughput, safety, and cost performanceย
  • Create process flow models that simulate production system behavior and align manufacturing output with program requirementsย
  • Develop a deep understanding ofย ourย engineering, manufacturing, and launch operations to improve production forecasting,ย identifyย process improvements, and proactivelyย monitorย engineering data inputsย
  • Establish andย monitorย key performance metrics whileย identifyingย decision down-select points and actionsย requiredย toย optimizeย production v demandย
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across systems and operational processes within and between functional organizationsย
  • Work collaboratively with partners across supply chain, engineering, and finance toย maintainย program alignmentย
  • Develop analytical models and visual dashboards to support strategic space planning and operational decision-makingย

Qualificationsย

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineeringย or businessย disciplineย
  • 1+ yearsย of experience in a fast-paced productionย orย start upย environmentย
  • Experience in using Excel, SQL, or Python/R for analysis or modeling dynamic systemsย
  • Experience using Smartsheetย orย equivalent scheduling tools, and/orย experience tracking critical pathย

Nice to haveย

  • Experience withย Inventory, production, and capacity planning, including use of MRP/ERP systemsย
  • Power BI and discrete-event simulation or modeling toolsย
  • Quantitative analysis: statistics, data analysis, cost-benefit evaluation, and visualizationย
  • Industrial, operations, process, or manufacturing engineering in a development-stage production environmentย
  • Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, and continuous improvement methodologiesย
  • Background in management science, operations engineering, or industrial engineeringย
  • Effective contributor within multidisciplinary, cross-functional teamsย
  • Ability toย operateย in fast-paced, high-pressure environmentsย
  • Clear and concise written and verbal communicationย

Compensation and Benefits:ย
