What does an Electrical Engineer in Product Development do?

An Electrical Engineer in Product Development is responsible for designing, testing, and refining electrical components or systems for new products. They work closely with cross-functional teams to develop innovative solutions, create prototypes, and ensure designs meet safety and performance standards. Their role often involves troubleshooting, optimizing circuits, and supporting the transition from concept to manufacturing. By combining technical expertise with creativity, they help bring new electronic products to market efficiently and reliably.

What is the difference between Electrical Engineer Product Development vs Electrical Engineer Design?

AspectElectrical Engineer Product DevelopmentElectrical Engineer Design
Primary FocusDeveloping and testing new electrical products from concept to prototypeCreating detailed electrical designs and schematics for products or systems
Work EnvironmentR&D labs, prototyping facilities, cross-functional teamsDesign offices, CAD labs, engineering departments
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, relevant certificationsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, relevant certifications
Industry UsageConsumer electronics, industrial equipment, automotiveConsumer electronics, industrial systems, appliances

Electrical Engineer Product Development focuses on creating and testing new electrical products, often involving prototyping and testing. Electrical Engineer Design emphasizes creating detailed electrical schematics and designs for products or systems. Both roles require similar credentials and are integral to the product lifecycle, but they differ in their primary activities and work environments.

What are the typical challenges faced by Electrical Engineers in product development roles?

Electrical Engineers in product development often encounter challenges such as balancing innovative design with manufacturability, meeting strict project deadlines, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. They must also troubleshoot unforeseen technical issues during prototyping and collaborate closely with cross-functional teams—including mechanical engineers, software developers, and manufacturing specialists—to ensure the final product meets all requirements. Staying updated with rapidly evolving technology and integrating new components effectively are also common challenges in this dynamic environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical Engineer in Product Development, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineer in Product Development, you need a solid background in circuit design, electronics, and engineering principles, often supported by a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD tools (such as Altium Designer or OrCAD), simulation software, and relevant industry standards or certifications (like PE or IPC) is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating across multidisciplinary teams and driving innovation. These capabilities ensure the creation of high-quality, reliable products that meet market and regulatory demands.

Job Summary
BEI Precision is seeking an Electrical Engineer to help design and develop the next generation of precision electromechanical products used in demanding aerospace, defense, and emerging technology applications.
This position offers the opportunity to work on challenging real-world engineering problems involving motion control systems, sensors, feedback devices, electronics, and electromechanical assemblies. You will participate in the complete product development lifecycle-from concept and design through prototyping, testing, validation, and production release.
We are looking for engineers who enjoy building things, solving technical challenges, and working closely with multidisciplinary teams. Whether your experience comes from industry, military service, research, internships, university design projects, robotics competitions, maker activities, or personal engineering projects, we are interested in candidates who demonstrate strong technical aptitude, curiosity, initiative, and a desire to grow.
This position is primarily on-site at our Maumelle, Arkansas facility to support hands-on development, laboratory testing, collaboration, and rapid product iteration.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Design and develop analog and digital electronic circuits for new products and product enhancements.
  • Participate in the development of electromechanical systems including rotary motion devices, sensors, and control systems.
  • Design, analyze, and troubleshoot motor control and feedback systems.
  • Develop schematics, electrical architectures, test plans, and engineering documentation.
  • PCB design, component selection, prototype development, and product testing.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers, software engineers, manufacturing personnel, quality engineers, and customers to develop innovative solutions.
  • Build, test, and evaluate prototypes in laboratory and production environments.
  • Analyze performance data and recommend design improvements.
  • Participate in design reviews, root cause investigations, and problem-solving activities.
  • Support transition of products from development into manufacturing.
  • Contribute to project planning, technical risk assessment, and product development activities.
  • Continuously improve engineering processes, tools, and product performance.

Requirements
