What does an electrical engineer product development do?

An Electrical Engineer in Product Development is responsible for designing, testing, and refining electrical components or systems for new products. They work closely with cross-functional teams to develop innovative solutions, create prototypes, and ensure designs meet safety and performance standards. Their role often involves troubleshooting, optimizing circuits, and supporting the transition from concept to manufacturing. By combining technical expertise with creativity, they help bring new electronic products to market efficiently and reliably.

What are the typical challenges faced by electrical engineers in product development roles?

Electrical Engineers in product development often encounter challenges such as balancing innovative design with manufacturability, meeting strict project deadlines, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. They must also troubleshoot unforeseen technical issues during prototyping and collaborate closely with cross-functional teams—including mechanical engineers, software developers, and manufacturing specialists—to ensure the final product meets all requirements. Staying updated with rapidly evolving technology and integrating new components effectively are also common challenges in this dynamic environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical engineer product development, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineer in Product Development, you need a solid background in circuit design, electronics, and engineering principles, often supported by a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD tools (such as Altium Designer or OrCAD), simulation software, and relevant industry standards or certifications (like PE or IPC) is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating across multidisciplinary teams and driving innovation. These capabilities ensure the creation of high-quality, reliable products that meet market and regulatory demands.

What is the difference between Electrical Engineer Product Development vs Electrical Engineer Design?

AspectElectrical Engineer Product DevelopmentElectrical Engineer Design
Primary FocusDeveloping and testing new electrical products from concept to prototypeCreating detailed electrical designs and schematics for products or systems
Work EnvironmentR&D labs, prototyping facilities, cross-functional teamsDesign offices, CAD labs, engineering departments
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, relevant certificationsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, relevant certifications
Industry UsageConsumer electronics, industrial equipment, automotiveConsumer electronics, industrial systems, appliances

Electrical Engineer Product Development focuses on creating and testing new electrical products, often involving prototyping and testing. Electrical Engineer Design emphasizes creating detailed electrical schematics and designs for products or systems. Both roles require similar credentials and are integral to the product lifecycle, but they differ in their primary activities and work environments.

Job Description:
Mechanical Engineer Product Development
Collaborate with Innovative 3Mers Around the World
Choosing where to start and grow your career has a major impact on your professional and personal life, so it's equally important you know that the company that you choose to work at, and its leaders, will support and guide you. With a wide variety of people, global locations, technologies and products, 3M is a place where you can collaborate with other curious, creative 3Mers.
This position provides an opportunity to transition from other private, public, government or military experience to a 3M career.
The Impact You'll Make in this Role
As a Product Development Engineer, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:
  • Lead the mechanical design and development of the next-generation automated robotic installation tools from concept through production.
  • Design precision mechanisms and assemblies using 3D CAD (e.g., SolidWorks).
  • Design mechanical enclosures, components and assemblies.
  • Design for robustness, serviceability, and long-term field reliability.
  • Integrate motors, drives, encoders, sensors into robust mechanical assemblies, working closely with electronics and controls engineers.
  • Develop motion and actuation concepts and collaborate on servo/torque-motor and control-system integration (e.g., EtherCAT-based motion).
  • Perform engineering analysis - tolerance stack-up, kinematics, structural, thermal and load studies - to ensure reliable, manufacturable designs.
  • Assemble, characterize, calibrate and troubleshoot mechanical prototypes and engineering builds, integrating with electrical and control subsystems and iterating toward field-ready products.
  • Select and specify mechanical components, materials and finishes, balance performance, cost and manufacturability.
  • Drive product architecture, feasibility studies, prototyping, and engineering verification activities.
  • Create mechanical documentation, including detailed drawings, GD&T, BOMs, and design records.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, suppliers, and external development partners to scale designs into production.
  • Interact with regulatory teams to ensure compliance with applicable safety and machinery standards.
  • Generate intellectual property positions, including invention submissions, patents and 3M trade secrets.
  • Communicate tests and other program results to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Drive the development and commercialization of products to efficiently, reliably and sustainably deliver energy to customers around the world.
