Job description

Definition Definition: Under general supervision of the Probation Supervisor, manages a caseload of adult and/or juvenile probationers/parolees, conducts investigations/inquiries, and prepares a variety of records and reports. This job Class is treated as FLSA exempt and considered a DRIVING position. Essential Functions: (Essential functions, may vary among positions, but may include the following tasks, knowledge, abilities, skills, and other characteristics.

This list of tasks ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in this classification). Examples of Tasks Tasks: Conducts pre-sentence investigations for the type(s) of cases assigned (domestic violence, adult, or juvenile). Conducts inquiries and investigations by (1) requesting and searching for files, documents, court orders, reports and case notes; (2) by written requests, letters, memos, release of information forms, and referrals, and (3) by interviews and personal contacts with defendant's victims, witnesses, prosecutors, counselors, employers, and defense advocates.

Monitors probationers' compliance with conditions of probation. Conducts home, field, and school visits; including nighttime and weekend spot checks of client behavior. Occasionally assists probationers with transportation needs.

Maintains individual files; document all contacts. Maintains a network with others involved with/or providing service to the client: police and detention officers, prosecutors, defense advocates, judges, teachers, doctors, nurses, court staff, counselors, victims, and affected families. Meets weekly with probationers and contacts parents and/or guardians.

Provides counseling, encouragement, perspective based upon experience with similar cases, and mediation. Reviews and clarifies agreement and conditions with clients. Provides probation lists, logs, and weekly reports to judges.

Refers clients to appropriate departments for assessments as court ordered. Files affidavits for probation violations. Attends adult, juvenile, and domestic violence court hearings relevant to the type of case assigned Provides Community Judges with detailed information regarding defendants, victims, and other circumstances/conditions and to make recommendations to the Judges regarding appropriate sentencing.

May testify regarding probation revocation, sentencing recommendations, and related matters. Conducts random early morning or late night visits to probationers. Provide written reports to the Court in regard to individuals on probation.

Performs other job related tasks as assigned to enhance and facilitate the operations of the department. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics: Knowledge of the history, culture, laws, rules, customs and traditions of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Knowledge of Tribal laws.

Knowledge of the purpose, current issues, projects, organization, policies, and employee responsibilities of the division to which assigned. Knowledge of gang behavior, trends, signs, and slang. Knowledge of SRPMIC record keeping requirements regarding probationers.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of probation case management. Knowledge of social, training and rehabilitation programs available to Community members. Skill in interpreting and assessing situations, issues and concerns.

Skill in maintaining confidentiality and using discretion in dealing with sensitive information. Skill in identifying problems, recommending solutions, and using initiative to implement them Skill in listening well, and communicating effectively with community members, employees and diverse members of the public having considerable variation in values and educational and cultural background. Ability to develop and maintain a reliable and cooperative network of others involved in the case of the client being served.

Ability to preparing and maintain a variety of records and reports related to probation activities. Ability to adapt to changing work situations and assignments. Ability to coordinate and present programs to hostile and uncooperative offenders.

Ability to listen well, and communicate effectively with community members, employees and diverse members of the public having considerable variation in values and educational and cultural background. Ability to use initiative and independent judgment, while at the same time recognizing when it is appropriate to refer matters to the Probation Supervisor's attention. Minimum Qualifications Education & Experience: An associate's degree with coursework in Criminal Justice, Social Work or a closely related field required and one year of full-time work in vocational counseling, probation/parole, diversion program development or a related field.

Preference will be given to individuals who have a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work or a related field. Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of experience and education that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered when filing the position. Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill Special Requirements May be required to work beyond normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays.
