As Probation Assistants, you will provide administrative support to Probation Officers while helping maintain a safe, organized, and client-focused environment. In this role, you will interact with clients and the public, support evidence-based programming, monitor client activities, maintain accurate records, and perform a variety of clerical and operational duties. Working collaboratively with Probation staff and community partners, you will also contribute to the department's mission of promoting accountability, rehabilitation, and positive behavior change. Additional responsibilities include:
  • Providing customer service to clients, justice partners, and the public in person, over the phone, and electronically
  • Monitoring client activities and following established safety and security protocols
  • Conducting chemical testing, maintaining testing schedules, and accurately documenting results
  • Facilitating Cognitive Behavioral Interventions (CBI) and supporting evidence-based practices, including motivational interviewing
  • Entering and maintaining accurate information in justice system databases and other computerized systems
  • Scheduling appointments, answering multi-line phone calls, and preparing correspondence

This recruitment is currently being conducted to fill two full-time Probation Assistants in the Probation Department. This employment list may also be used to fill future full-time, part-time, or extra-help (temporary) positions as they occur during the active status of the list. Minimum Qualifications
Experience and Education: Any combination of education and/or training which would provide an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed herein. Normally, completion of academic course work in sociology, psychology, counseling, social work, criminology, administration of justice or closely related field; OR one year's experience working in a law enforcement, public safety, or social services agency.
License: Possession of a valid driver's license. A Class B driver's license may be required for some assignments and must be obtained prior to the first day of work.
The positions advertised in this announcement require possession of a valid California driver's license.
Background Requirement: For some assignments, incumbents shall not have been convicted of a felony in this state or any other state or in any federal jurisdiction, or of any offense in any other state or in any federal jurisdiction, which would have been a felony if committed in this state, nor be under current formal probation supervision. Candidates convicted of a felony over twenty years ago may be considered for certain assignments.
CANDIDATES CERTIFIED FOR EMPLOYMENT MUST BE WILLING TO UNDERGO AN IN-DEPTH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING A PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION AND CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECK, AND A MEDICAL EXAMINATION.
Citizenship Requirement: Permanent resident aliens who wish to be employed as peace officers must apply for citizenship at least one year before application for such employment.
