Job description

JOB SUMMARY
The College Student Internship provides qualified students practical work experience that compliments their academic course work, as well as course credit (if approved by the college or university). The College Student Internship is designed to provide students with an opportunity to integrate theory and practice. The internship is a paid, non-sworn position that caries from 8 hours to 24 hours per week, as agreed by the police department, intern, and college/university (if applicable). Students are able to gain valuable work experience, on-the-job training, and have an opportunity to develop a professional networking base for the future positions in government service or law enforcement. All of the requirements must be agreed to by the Mount Pleasant Police Department, the intern applicant, and the college/university (if applicable) before the internship starts.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The work requires some agility and physical strength, such as moving in or about construction sites or over rough terrain or standing or walking most of the work period. Occasionally, work may require lifting heavy objects and carrying them (up to 60 Lbs.). There may be need to stretch and reach to retrieve materials. Usually, the work will require extended physical effort over a significant portion of the workday.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The intern will learn, assist, and complete tasks in the areas of: Criminal Investigations, Support Services, and Operations Bureaus.
Criminal Investigations:
  • Prepare statistical and narrative reports and correspondence based on research or on special project needs.
  • Research and historical statistical data assessment regarding calls for service such as driving under the influence, suicidal ideations, mental health and other departmental related calls.

Support Services:
  • Plan and execute various projects as needed for the Police department including, but not limited to conducting research by a variety of means via examination of government records, use of the internet, and performing statistical analysis.
  • Represent the Mount Pleasant Police Department in the community (coffee with a cop, organizations, and other public functions) within town departments as assigned by supervisor.
  • Assist the office of recruitment and retention with statistical research on areas to focus with advertisement.

Operations:
  • May be required to coordinate and direct activities of other staff members on project related work assignments.
  • Provide customer service by providing information and directions as requested; completes routine office duties by answering phones, transferring calls and taking messages, non-criminal to misdemeanor reports from citizens. Perform duties as required.
