Payroll Director (or Senior Manager) - Payroll Operations
Manchester, MO
Permanent | Hybrid (2-3 Days Onsite)
Soni's client is seeking a Payroll Director (or Senior Manager) - Payroll Operations to lead end-to-end payroll processing, operational standardization, and large-scale payroll transformation initiatives within a complex, multi-entity organization. This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on payroll operations leader who thrives in high-growth environments and enjoys building scalable processes, leading teams, and driving continuous improvement.
Reporting to senior finance leadership, this individual will be responsible for payroll execution, process optimization, systems implementation support, and the development of a high-performing payroll operations function across multiple jurisdictions.
Responsibilities of the Payroll Director (or Senior Manager) - Payroll Operations:
  • Own end-to-end payroll processing operations with a focus on accuracy (?99.8%) and 100% on-time payroll processing and funding
  • Standardize payroll processes, procedures, and workflows across all entities and business units
  • Develop, implement, and maintain payroll SOPs, controls, and service level standards
  • Lead payroll centralization and shared services initiatives, including transition from decentralized payroll models
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on automation, efficiency, and reduction of manual processes
  • Support payroll system implementations, upgrades, integrations, and vendor coordination
  • Partner with IT, HRIS, Finance, and Operations to optimize data flow, interfaces, and reporting accuracy
  • Build scalable payroll processes to support organizational growth, acquisitions, and increased complexity
  • Track and report payroll operational KPIs, performance metrics, and efficiency gains
  • Hire, develop, and lead a high-performing payroll operations team with clear accountability and structure
  • Support payroll issue resolution and ensure timely and accurate payroll execution across the enterprise
  • Contribute to M&A integration efforts as they relate to payroll operations and system alignment

Requirements of the Payroll Director (or Senior Manager) - Payroll Operations:
  • 10+ years of progressive payroll operations, shared services, finance operations, or process leadership experience in complex multi-state and/or multi-entity environments
  • Proven experience leading and building payroll or operations teams in high-volume environments
  • Strong background in payroll processing, operational workflows, and service delivery management
  • Experience with payroll system implementations, integrations, and vendor management
  • Demonstrated success driving process improvement, automation, and operational efficiency initiatives
  • Experience supporting mergers, acquisitions, or large-scale organizational growth initiatives
  • Strong collaboration skills across Finance, HR, IT/HRIS, and Operations
  • Execution-focused leader with strong analytical skills, accountability, and a continuous improvement mindset

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with payroll centralization or shared services model implementation
  • Exposure to high-growth, private equity-backed, or multi-entity organizations
  • Strong background in process reengineering and operational KPI management

Compensation:
$140,000 - $190,000 (Senior Manager to Director Level)
10% - 20% bonus depending on level and experience
