What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive at a payroll company, and why are they important?

Thriving at a payroll company requires strong numerical skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of payroll laws and regulations, often supported by a degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with payroll software systems such as ADP or Paychex, and certifications like the Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC), are commonly expected. Excellent organizational skills, discretion, and effective communication help professionals manage sensitive information and client relationships. These skills ensure accurate payroll processing, legal compliance, and trustworthiness in handling confidential employee and financial data.

What is the difference between Payroll Companies vs Payroll Specialists?

Employer & Industry UsageServe multiple clients across industriesEmployed by companies or payroll service providers

Payroll Companies are external firms providing payroll processing services to multiple clients, while Payroll Specialists are professionals working within organizations or payroll firms to manage payroll tasks. Both roles require knowledge of payroll laws and software, but their work settings and client interactions differ.

What are some common challenges faced by payroll specialists working at payroll companies, and how can they effectively manage these challenges?

Payroll specialists at payroll companies often manage payroll for multiple clients, each with unique needs and compliance requirements. Common challenges include keeping up with changing tax regulations, ensuring data accuracy, and meeting tight deadlines during payroll cycles. Effective management of these challenges involves strong organizational skills, continuous professional development, and effective communication with both clients and internal teams. Utilizing up-to-date payroll software and maintaining a detailed checklist can also help streamline processes and reduce errors.

What is the highest paying job in payroll?

The highest paying roles in payroll typically include payroll managers and payroll directors, who oversee payroll operations and ensure compliance. These positions often require extensive experience, leadership skills, and knowledge of payroll software and regulations, with salaries reaching six figures in many organizations.

Will payroll be replaced by AI?

Payroll professionals manage employee compensation, and AI is increasingly used to automate tasks like data entry, calculations, and compliance checks. While AI can handle routine processes, human oversight remains essential for complex issues, decision-making, and ensuring accuracy in payroll management.

How much does a payroll company make?

Payroll companies generate revenue primarily through service fees charged to clients for processing payroll, managing tax filings, and providing related HR services. Their earnings depend on the number of clients and employees served, with typical fees ranging from $25 to $200 per client per month. Larger firms or those offering comprehensive services may earn significantly more, often in the millions annually.

What are payroll companies?

Payroll companies are specialized firms that handle the administration of employee pay and related tasks for other businesses. They manage tasks such as calculating wages, withholding taxes, filing tax forms, and ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time. Payroll companies may also offer additional services like benefits administration, HR support, and compliance with labor laws. By outsourcing payroll, businesses can save time, reduce errors, and ensure compliance with complex tax regulations.

Is payroll a good career?

Payroll is a stable career that involves processing employee compensation, managing tax compliance, and using payroll software. It requires attention to detail, knowledge of employment laws, and often benefits from certifications like the Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC). The job can offer steady employment with opportunities for advancement in finance or human resources.

Payroll Specialist - Bilingual

Unify CPA & Payroll

Fort Collins, CO

$21.65 - $31.25/hr

Full-time

Re-posted 3 days ago

Job description

This role is located in Fort Collins, CO and is fully in-person.

Maybe you’ve been a Payroll Specialist in one of those big box corporate payroll companies. You know, the kind that makes clients feel like a number; the kind that made you feel like a number.

Or, maybe you’ve been a Payroll Specialist in a payroll company that doesn’t feel like it used to; where you aren’t as proud to be part of it as you once were.

You need to get to know Unify! We’re different from conventional payroll companies because we’re also a CPA firm. We build much more strategic, consultative business relationships with our clients than a regular payroll company ever could, because we are trusted with so much more of their business. That means our retention is amazing!

Our focus is always small businesses. That’s worked really well for us. The growth trajectory we’ve been on for several years will have us tripling our revenue in ten years. We’re building for that future now, and that’s where you could come in.

Our Bilingual Payroll Specialist will:

  • Train English and Spanish-speaking customers to use our payroll, timekeeping, and onboarding software (isolved).
  • Process incoming payrolls for various businesses.
  • Apprise customers of payroll laws and regulations that impact their business.
  • Maintain employee records
  • Enter payroll and other HR data.

We seek a Payroll Specialist who has:

  • 3+ Years as a Payroll Specialist in a Payroll Company or CPA Firm
  • Experience using and/or training iSolved Payroll Software.
  • At least a High School diploma. FPC or CPP preferred
  • An aptitiude for handling numbers in a professional setting.
  • A robust understanding of payroll tax and payroll laws and regulations, or the ability to learn quickly
  • The innate ability to build customer confidence and lasting relationships with our clients
  • Strong communication and organizational skills, the emotional intelligence, and the professional voice needed to directly communicate with clients
  • The inclination to take initiative and use independent judgment
  • Mastery of both English and Spanish.

This will not be the right opportunity for those who:

  • Do not have at least 3 years of experience in Payroll Companies AND with iSolved.
  • Are uncomfortable or struggle to understand concepts when handling sensitive financial and payroll information
  • Need or expect a lot of oversight or hand-holding
  • Enjoy or participate in office gossip and triangulation
  • Approach new ideas, new clients, new team members, or new technologies with skepticism or pessimism rather than seeing potential
  • Want to be left alone and uninvolved in the growth of our firm.
  • Are not able to speak, read, and write in both Spanish and English at a professional level appropriate for customer-facing positions.

Our expected pay range for this position is $21.65 - $31.25 per hour at 25-40 hrs per week depending on availability.

We expect to have this job open until the end of May.
