Job description

Patient Registration Specialist

Functioning within the Health System’s mission, values, objectives, policies and procedures, the Patient Registration Specialist is responsible for accurate scheduling (including but not limited to outpatient radiology, laboratory, endoscopy, and pre-admission/operation testing) and registration of patients through interviewing, registering, screening for charity eligibility, verifying medical necessity, interpreting physician orders, and collecting the patient portion of monies due the facility for hospital services. S/he greets and provides information to patients for outpatient and inpatient services; works with escort service to provide safe and appropriate patient transportation. The Patient Registration Specialist completes all necessary forms and records; ensures completion of accurate billing information to patient accounts; and balances cash drawer at the end of each shift. S/he works collaboratively with team members, including Physician Office staff, to meet customer needs and ensure LMHS goals and objectives for quality service and patient satisfaction are met.

Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent. Post-secondary coursework in medical terminology and/or computer skills is preferred.

Licensure/Certification:

BLS Required.

Experience:

Previous experience as a registration interviewer or medical secretary and experience transcribing verbal orders is preferred. Experience with coding preferred.

Skills:

Strong customer service and communication skills and a high degree of professionalism is required. Basic typing (40 WPM), demonstrated numeric skill, and the ability to produce high quality, accurate work in a high stress, multitasking environment are also required. Must also have documented ability to exhibit patience and tact in dealing with ill patients; work with speed and proficiency while under stress; show flexibility with work schedule changes; and have a courteous and respectful demeanor with all constituents including associates, physicians, and patients.
