Description/Duties and Responsibilities
The City of Santa Clarita is committed to providing a challenging and meaningful work experience for college students. The City offers unique opportunities for students to gain hands-on and in-depth experience in a variety of disciplines related to local, regional, state, and federal government operations. We provide real-world work assignments, which provide interns the opportunity to work side-by-side with professional City staff committed to teamwork and providing superior municipal services to the community of Santa Clarita.
This internship provides an opportunity to contribute to projects related to the Santa Clarita Community Task Force on Homelessness through research, data collection, projects, and presentations.
Salary: $20.06 - $25.41/hour (Undergraduate Level)
This position may work up to 20 hours per week and is based on the needs of the department. The anticipated duration of the internship is approximately 6-12 months, but may end earlier or be extended depending on department needs
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Assists with the City's role as coordinator of the Santa Clarita Community Task Force on Homelessness.
• Prepares handouts, reports, spreadsheets, and presentations on a variety of topics related to homelessness
• Researches and analyzes applicable federal, state, and regional data and policies related to homelessness
• Researches and assists with tracking funding through state and federal grant opportunities
• Attends various weekly, monthly, and quarterly meetings related to the City's homelessness response and the Task Force
• Provides administrative support for the Task Force
• Establish positive working relationships with City employees, outside agencies, and the public
Education and Experience
If you are currently an undergraduate student or recent graduate with a field of study in Political Science, Social Science, Public Administration, or a related field, and are interested in gaining meaningful hands-on work experience at the local government level, this opportunity may be for you.
Knowledge and Abilities
• General understanding of governmental organizations and municipal operations
• General understanding of homelessness response efforts is highly desirable
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to oversee and manage multiple deadlines simultaneously
• Strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing, including the ability to develop comprehensive reports, general correspondence, and make presentations
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with outside agencies, City staff, and the public
• Strong customer service skills and the ability to provide program information and respond to Task Force members' inquiries and requests
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Proficient in research techniques, survey methods, data collection, and analysis
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze complex problems, be an innovative and strategic thinker, identify effective solutions, and make sound decisions
• Computer experience, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Experience with website design a plus
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to produce work that is accurate, complete, and on time
• Ability to lift, drag, and push files, paper, and documents weighing up to 25 pounds
