The purpose of the position is to provide customer service to library patrons. This is accomplished by returning materials to the appropriate area and position; working with patrons at any public service desk; and responding to requests and inquiries. Other duties may include processing library materials; aiding users in locating materials; assisting with computer lab use; and assisting with events or functions.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides customer service to the public by working at any public service desk; greeting users and assisting with requests; directing patrons to the appropriate library area; updating user information; processing, checking out, and renewing materials; completing patron registrations; assisting with computer lab use; and collecting fines and fees;
  • Maintains organization of library materials by sorting and shelving items in proper order; inspecting materials for damage; and routing damaged items for repair or further action;
  • Participates in cross-training and collaborates with staff across the library to support daily operations and ensure consistent, high-quality patron service;
  • Participates in staff meetings to discuss and solve problems, contribute ideas for improvement, and keep updated on library plans and activities;
  • Assists with opening and closing duties;
  • Performs other assigned duties.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience; and
  • Valid Driver's License.
Position requires the ability to work irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
Supplemental Information

  • Demonstrated ability and enthusiasm for working with the public;
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn cataloging standards in an automated library system;
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn reference techniques and sources;
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn collection development techniques and print and electronic resources;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Skill in the operation and use of hardware and peripherals, plus standard office software, which includes databases and presentation programs, along with standard Microsoft products;
  • Skill in communicating effectively both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to provide internal/external guidance and customer assistance via all forms of communication;
  • Ability to exercise ethical decision making, good judgment, and discretion in applying and interpreting library and City rules, regulations, policies, and procedures;
  • Ability to provide internal and external positive customer service;
  • Ability to assist patrons and address concerns in a calm, respectful, and positive manner;
  • Ability to work as part of a cohesive team; willingness to assist and support coworkers, contribute ideas, and maintain flexibility;
  • Ability to use computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes;
  • Ability to present programs and materials to the public, both internally and externally;
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, with co-workers, the public, and elected and appointed officials;
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with City administration, other employees, and the general public;
