Description
Incumbent serves as Process Server for the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, responsible for processing and delivering civil process writs, warrants, and orders.
Examples of Duties
  • Serves various legal documents, including summonses, court orders to appear, and notices of hearings. Executes levies from Courts to parties residing in the County and other states.
  • Responds to citizen, Court and various official inquiries concerning enforcement procedures, status of pending cases, and Department policies.
  • Verifies legal document information, schedules process serving and returns documents to appropriate officials and Courts.
  • Assists other County departments and the public by providing information and directions as requested.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED. Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to make practical application of the customary practices, procedures, rules and regulations of the Sheriff’s Department.
  • Complete knowledge of County and City streets, roads, and highways and area law enforcement demands, and the ability to effectively plan and schedule delivery of legal documents of the Court.
  • Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to complete required reports within Department deadlines.
  • Working knowledge of universal health precautions and blood borne pathogens control, and ability to apply such knowledge to protect oneself against infection.
  • Working knowledge of radio frequencies, codes, procedures, and limitations and ability to speak clearly and distinctly, hear and be heard and understood when communicating in person, by radio or by telephone.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to use all assigned Department equipment, including, but not limited to, computer, vehicle, copier, and telephone.
  • Knowledge of basic filing systems and ability to create and maintain accurate and complete department records/files.
  • Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of Department information and records according to state requirements.
  • Ability to comply with all employer and Department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.
  • Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate/hostile persons.
  • Ability to perform essential functions of the position without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of self and other individuals in the workplace.
  • Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out oral or written instructions and present findings in oral or written form.
  • Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment. Ability to work rapidly for long periods, occasionally under time pressure.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of people and/or locations, and plan and layout assigned work projects.
  • Ability to read and interpret detailed prints, sketches, layouts, specifications or maps.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and demonstrated safe driving record.

  • Incumbent performs a variety of public service duties according to a flexible, customary routine with work priorities primarily determined by supervisor. Assignments are guided by definite objectives using a variety of methods or procedures. Decisions are always determined by specific instructions or existing, well established policies and procedures. Errors in work are primarily detected or prevented through notification from other departments, agencies, or the public. Undetected errors could result in inconvenience to other agencies or the public.
  • Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other County departments, and the public for the purpose of serving legal documents and exchanging information.
  • Incumbent reports directly to Sheriff.
  • Incumbent performs majority of duties in a vehicle and is frequently exposed to the normal hazards associated with serving court papers, involving working in various temperatures, walking on uneven terrain, lifting/carrying objects weighing less than 25 pounds, keyboarding, handling/grasping objects, speaking clearly, and hearing sounds/communication.
