What is a Parent Partner?

Parent Partners are individuals, often with lived experience as parents or caregivers of children with behavioral, mental health, or developmental challenges, who provide peer support and advocacy for other families navigating similar systems. They use their personal experiences to offer guidance, emotional support, and practical advice to parents, helping them understand and access community resources and services. Parent Partners work alongside professionals in educational, healthcare, or social service settings to empower families and improve outcomes for children.

How does a Parent Partner typically support families and collaborate with other professionals on a care team?

Parent Partners use their lived experience to provide emotional support, guidance, and advocacy for families navigating complex child and family services. They often work alongside case managers, therapists, and educators, ensuring families' voices are heard and needs are met. Collaboration is key, as Parent Partners help bridge communication gaps and coordinate resources, making the service process less overwhelming for parents. This teamwork approach fosters trust, empowers families, and improves outcomes for children and youth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Parent Partner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Parent Partner, you need lived experience navigating child and family services, a solid understanding of support systems, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with case management software, documentation tools, and local community resources is typically required. Exceptional communication, active listening, and empathy are crucial soft skills that help build trust with families and collaborate with professionals. These skills and qualifications are vital for effectively empowering families, advocating for their needs, and ensuring positive outcomes within child and family support systems.
