What is an outside sales executive?

An Outside Sales Executive is a professional responsible for selling products or services by meeting potential and existing clients in person, typically outside of a traditional office setting. They often travel within a specific geographic area to generate leads, build relationships, make presentations, and close sales deals. Unlike inside sales roles, outside sales executives focus on face-to-face interactions to better understand customer needs and tailor solutions. Their duties may also include attending industry events and networking to expand their client base. Strong communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills are essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an outside sales executive?

To thrive as an Outside Sales Executive, you need strong sales acumen, persuasive communication, and a proven track record in business development, often backed by a bachelor’s degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with CRM software (like Salesforce), mobile productivity tools, and pipeline management systems is typically required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, resilience, and the ability to build lasting client relationships help top performers stand out. These competencies are crucial for consistently meeting sales targets, expanding market share, and maintaining competitive advantage.

What are some common challenges faced by outside sales executives, and how can they be addressed?

Outside Sales Executives often face challenges such as building and maintaining a robust client pipeline, adapting to varied customer needs, and managing travel schedules efficiently. Staying organized, leveraging CRM tools, and maintaining regular follow-ups with clients can help address these challenges and contribute to consistent sales growth.

ABOUT ANTILLEAN MARINE SHIPPING CORP

Antillean Marine Shipping Corp is a trusted ocean freight carrier connecting Miami to the Caribbean, including Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Turks & Caicos and the Bahamas. As the company continues to grow under new leadership, we are focused on strengthening our brand presence, customer engagement, and community connection through consistent storytelling and marketing efforts.

Position Overview:

The Sales Executive brings in new customers, takes care of current customers, and helps the company meet sales goals. This role uses simple Six Sigma ideas: understand customer needs, follow clear steps, reduce errors, solve problems early, and improve results over time. The person in this role must communicate clearly, stay organized, and understand ocean shipping services.

Key Responsibilities:

Client Relationship Management

  • Build strong relationships with current customers through regular follow-up and clear communication.
  • Learn what each customer needs and make sure the service meets those needs.
  • Find new customers, qualify leads, and turn good opportunities into new business.

Sales Strategy and Execution

  • Follow a clear sales process to reach revenue and customer growth goals.
  • Review market trends, customer feedback, and competitor activity to find new opportunities.
  • Understand pricing and rates so quotes are accurate, competitive, and aligned with company services.
  • Look for delays, repeat issues, or waste in the sales process and suggest better ways of working.

Negotiation and Contracts

  • Discuss pricing and service terms with customers to reach fair and profitable agreements.
  • Make sure contracts are complete, correct, and follow company rules.
  • Reduce errors by checking details before contracts are sent or approved.

Promotion and Marketing

  • Explain the value of the company's shipping services in a clear and simple way.
  • Use presentations, meetings, and marketing materials to support sales efforts.
  • Attend trade shows and industry events to build relationships and generate leads.

Operational Coordination

  • Work closely with operations teams so customer needs are met on time and with fewer issues.
  • Share accurate booking and service details to help the team deliver smooth service.
  • Identify service problems early, help fix root causes, and support corrective action.

Reporting and Analysis

  • Track sales activity, revenue, quotes, and forecasts, and share updates with management.
  • Measure results against goals and use data to find gaps and improvement opportunities.
  • Maintain simple and accurate records to support better decisions.

Customer Support

  • Help customers with questions, issues, and complaints in a timely and professional way.
  • Prepare bookings, quotes, and service contracts accurately and on time.
  • Follow up after the sale to confirm satisfaction, solve open issues, and support repeat business.
  • Perform other assigned duties as needed.

Requirements:

  • Strong communication, relationship-building, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to identify sales opportunities, manage pipelines, and close new business.
  • Knowledge of freight forwarding, ocean shipping, logistics, or related transportation services preferred.
  • Comfortable preparing quotes, contracts, and customer correspondence accurately and on time.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn internal systems and CRM tools.
  • Ability to work independently, collaborate across teams, and represent the company professionally.
  • Must have a clean driving record.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor's degree in business, marketing, logistics, or a related field preferred.
  • 2+ years of sales, account management, customer service, or logistics experience preferred.
  • Experience in shipping, freight, transportation, or supply chain environments is a plus.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Creole skills are a plus for serving Caribbean markets.
