What are Outside Sales Account Managers?

Outside Sales Account Managers are professionals responsible for generating new business and maintaining relationships with existing clients through face-to-face meetings and fieldwork, rather than working primarily from an office. They identify potential clients, present products or services, negotiate contracts, and ensure customer satisfaction. Their role often includes traveling to client locations, attending industry events, and collaborating with internal teams to meet sales targets. Outside Sales Account Managers play a crucial role in driving company revenue and expanding market presence.

What is the difference between Outside Sales Account Manager vs Inside Sales Representative?

AspectOutside Sales Account ManagerInside Sales Representative

Customer InteractionFace-to-face meetings with clientsPhone or online communication
Sales ProcessProactive, involves traveling and personal engagementReactive, relies on inbound leads and virtual outreach

While both roles focus on sales, Outside Sales Account Managers primarily engage with clients in person outside the office, building relationships through face-to-face meetings. Inside Sales Representatives typically work from the office, handling inbound and outbound calls. The roles differ in work environment, interaction style, and sales approach, but both require strong communication skills and industry knowledge.

How does an Outside Sales Account Manager typically balance time between prospecting new clients and maintaining existing relationships?

As an Outside Sales Account Manager, you'll often split your time between identifying and reaching out to new prospects and nurturing current client accounts. Many companies expect you to allocate specific days or time blocks each week for prospecting—such as cold calling, attending networking events, or scheduling introductory meetings—while also dedicating regular check-ins and follow-ups for existing customers to ensure satisfaction and identify upsell opportunities. Effective time management and prioritization are crucial, and successful managers often use CRM tools to track their pipeline and balance these responsibilities efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Outside Sales Account Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Outside Sales Account Manager, you need strong sales acumen, negotiation skills, and a proven track record in managing client relationships, often supported by a degree in business or related fields. Familiarity with CRM software, sales analytics tools, and industry-specific platforms is typically required. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and resilience are crucial soft skills for success in this client-facing, target-driven role. These competencies enable you to build lasting client partnerships, consistently achieve sales targets, and adapt to evolving market demands.

  • Continuous collaboration with installation teams, project managers, and support staff

Qualifications:

  • Strong sales skills
  • In depth knowledge of home and commercial AV products and designs
  • Strong verbal and written interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to learn and become proficient in quote and proposal software
  • Ability to keep accurate records of leads, opportunities, and client interactions in an organized and detailed fashion
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
