Overview

Are you passionate about sustainable agriculture and hands-on work with plants and aquaponic systems? Do you enjoy supporting growth, productivity, and learning in a collaborative, team-based environment? Genesee Lake School, a MyPath Company, operates Homegrown Farms to provide fresh produce for our kitchens and group homes while teaching students about sustainable farming and environmental stewardship.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a dedicated Farm Operations Assistant to support general maintenance on the farm. This position plays a key role in maintaining equipment, performing animal chores, and all other farm duties as assigned by the Farm Operations Coordinator. Ideal candidates are hands-on, enjoy physical work in all types of weather, and have a passion for sustainable agriculture and student engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

Outdoor Field

  • Assist with planting, transplanting, weeding, watering, pruning, trellising, and harvesting crops.
  • Operate and maintain basic field tools and equipment safely.
  • Wash, sort, and pack produce for delivery to kitchens and group homes.
  • Drive company vehicle for deliveries.

Greenhouse and Barn

  • Perform animal chores including feeding, watering, keeping areas clean, maintenance of beehives.
  • Maintains inventory of tools, equipment and production materials.
  • Maintain greenhouse cleanliness, compost organic material, and assist with light repairs.
  • Monthly animal barn clean-up, general landscaping, and opening/closing of the pond.

Team and Culture

  • Work closely with Farm Operations Coordinator and Controlled Environmental Agriculturalist to meet production goals.
  • Communicate concerns or observations regarding crop, system, or equipment issues.
  • Model positive and respectful behavior for students and staff, promoting a safe and supportive work environment.
  • Collaborates on the monthly periodical "Goat Gazette".

Schedule

  • Full-time, year-round position
  • Monday-Friday 7a-3p or 8a-4p
  • One weekend day a month to assist with animal chore rotation.
  • Flexibility required to meet operational needs and seasonal demands.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Experience in gardening, farming, landscaping, or greenhouse work preferred.
  • Knowledge of organic growing systems, pests, or diseases a plus.
  • Pesticide Applicators' certificate for spraying in the greenhouse season is required. Cost will be covered for this certificate.

Required Skills & Attributes:

  • Ability to perform basic math for nutrient mixing and measurements.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow directions.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, bend, kneel, stand, and work outdoors.

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid Wisconsin Driver's License preferred with acceptable driving record.
  • Comfortable working in varying weather conditions and with plants, soil, animals, insects, and farm equipment.
