What is a music metadata?

A Music Metadata job involves managing, organizing, and maintaining metadata for music tracks to ensure accurate identification, cataloging, and discoverability. Professionals in this field work with data such as song titles, artist names, album information, release dates, genre classifications, and rights ownership. They may collaborate with streaming platforms, record labels, or music databases to optimize searchability and royalty tracking. Accuracy in metadata is crucial for proper crediting, revenue distribution, and enhancing user experience in digital music services.

What are typical daily responsibilities for someone working in music metadata?

In a Music Metadata position, your typical day involves gathering, entering, and verifying key details about songs, albums, and artists to ensure databases remain accurate and up to date. You'll routinely collaborate with music labels, distributors, and internal teams to resolve data inconsistencies, clarify information, and comply with industry standards. Other responsibilities often include researching missing metadata, updating genre and mood tags, and contributing to ongoing data quality projects. The work is both detail-oriented and collaborative, making communication and organization essential for success in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in music metadata, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Music Metadata role, you need a solid understanding of music cataloging, attention to detail, and proficiency in data entry or music information systems. Experience with metadata management platforms like MusicBrainz, Excel, and specific music rights databases is often required, and familiarity with industry standards such as DDEX or ISRC codes is beneficial. Strong organizational skills, the ability to meet tight deadlines, and clear communication with team members and clients are vital soft skills. These competencies ensure the accurate and timely maintenance of music metadata, which is crucial for discovery, copyright management, and revenue tracking throughout the music industry.
