Position Summary
The Director of Development-Athletics serves as a key member of the university's advancement team responsible for overseeing annual giving strategy and programming for Athletics. Specifically, position will develop and execute targeted strategies to increase alumni and friends giving through qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of benefactors leading to growth in major and annual giving for Athletics. The Director of Development-Athletics reports to the Senior Director of Development for Special Projects.

Description of Job Duties
  • Develop a comprehensive athletics annual giving program with quantifiable revenue goals.
  • Provide leadership in the development, coordination, and execution of strategies to increase membership in the Cardinals Club.
  • Develop a comprehensive athletics annual giving program with quantifiable revenue goals.
  • Develop qualification, cultivation, and solicitation strategies for prospects that lead to growth in major and annual giving for Athletics.
  • Manage an active portfolio of at 125-150 individual prospects that result in philanthropic dollars for the University.
  • In coordination with division leadership, work to develop and coordinate campaigns for facilities, scholarships, and identified special projects.
  • Work with university's development staff, key volunteers, and other stakeholders to identify prospective donors to support strategic priorities for Athletics.
  • Hold a minimum of 115 face-to-face visits annually.
  • Develop and cultivate relationships with donors and prospects through personal face-to-face visits discovering their philanthropic passions and aligning those with funding priorities of Athletics and the broader University.
  • Coordinate and execute various engagement and donor stewardship events.
  • Work closely with the Athletics Director and regularly involve the Athletics Director in face-to-face visits with benefactors.
  • Work closely with campus partners and treat those partners with dignity and respect.
  • Work collaboratively, proactively and in a professional service-oriented manner with all institutional internal and external stakeholders to further development goals while representing the core values of the institution.
  • Document results of contacts with donors in Raiser's Edge. Maintain documentation on a timely basis to be input by closing of each respective month, including contact reports, outlining donor strategies, proposal development and submissions per month.
  • Serve as a role model in carrying out the University of the Incarnate Word's mission, directing all actions to reflect the values and principles of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word and the University of the Incarnate Word. This includes attending to the dignity of others.
  • Establish and maintain an environment that encourages teamwork, collaboration, and ethical behavior.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
  • Support other members of the management team and their work.

  • Strong knowledge of current trends in alumni engagement, moves management, prospect research, wealth analysis and business.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills; excellent written and oral communication skills; an aptitude for critical thinking and problem-solving; ability to work well under pressure and maintain flexibility.
  • Highly developed relationship building skills.
  • Strong computer skills in MS Office and fundraising databases such as Raiser's Edge.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to identify understand and interpret personal compensation, private company, securities holdings, and other financial information from a variety of sources.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external constituents with multiple personality types, consistently exhibiting a level of professional maturity, judgment and decisiveness that motivates colleagues and inspires confidence.
  • Demonstrated ability to research and critically review information with the proven ability to exercise sound judgment as to the relevance of information, the manner of its collection and the delivery to various stakeholders.

Required Education
Bachelor's Degree.
Required Work Experience
  • Five (5) years of professional fundraising or sales experience.
  • Two (2) years of experience coordinating stewardship events and activities.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree.
  • Experience working in donor outreach, engagement, or fundraising within a higher education setting.

Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations
Must have a valid driver license, driving record that is insurable by UIW insurance carrier, and be at least 21 years of age, as required to drive for UIW.
Work Hours
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with extended hours as needed to meet departmental goals, to include evenings and weekends as necessary. Some travel required.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift up to 10lbs of marketing supplies.
  • Ability to reach overhead, bend, squat to retrieve marketing/events materials.
  • Ability to actively engage in events for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to regularly move about campus and event venues to actively engage donors, faculty, staff, and alumni, as well as attend meetings on and off campus.
