As a mail inserter, your responsibilities are to set up, operate, and troubleshoot mail sorting machines and other sorting equipment. You must calibrate the devices to handle different types of mail, such as bank statements, checks, and invoices. During the operation, you make routine inspections of the equipment to ensure that there are no quality control issues or mechanical problems with the setup. In addition to working on the machines, you perform clerical duties and document your daily work.
| Aspect | Mail Inserter | Mail Machine Operator |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | High school diploma or equivalent; training on specific inserter models | High school diploma or equivalent; certification may be preferred |
| Work Environment | Manufacturing or mailing facility, often standing for long periods | Mailroom or production area, operating mailing machines |
| Job Duties | Loading, operating, and maintaining mail inserters to assemble mail pieces | Operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining mailing machines |
The Mail Inserter and Mail Machine Operator roles are closely related, both working in mailing or production facilities. The main difference lies in the equipment used: Mail Inserters focus on operating specific inserter machines to assemble mail, while Mail Machine Operators handle a broader range of mailing equipment.
