Program Dates: Jun 15, 2026 - Jul 17, 2026
Location: PHASE I, Non-Residential Component -Wilson Community College (2 weeks June 15 - June 25, 2026)
Location: PHASE II, Residential Component - East Carolina University, Greenville NC (2 weeks July 5, 2026- July 17, 2026)
Hours Per Week: Up to 28hrs per week (see program structure below)
Wilson Community College is seeking Residential Counselors for the Summer 2026 TRIO Upward Bound Summer Experience Program. Residential Counselors play a vital role in supporting high school students (grades 10-12) in their academic, social, and personal development during both the non-residential and residential components of the summer program.
Under the direction of the Upward Bound Coordinator, the primary objective of the Residential Counselor position is to supervise program participants and ensure their well-being regarding health, safety, morale, discipline, interpersonal relationships, and academic engagement.
Phase I: Non-Residential Component
Location: Wilson Community College
Schedule: Monday-Thursday, 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (2 weeks)
During this phase, Residential Counselors:
  • Serve in a daytime instructional and student support role.
  • Assist with academic activities, workshop facilitation, and supervision.
  • Are not required to reside on campus.
  • Are compensated hourly for actual hours worked.
  • No overnight supervision is required during this component.

Phase II: Residential Component
Location: East Carolina University, Greenville, NC
Duration: 2 weeks (Sunday evening through Thursday evening residency required)
During this phase, Residential Counselors:
  • Are required to reside and sleep in assigned campus housing.
  • Supervise students during daytime and evening activities.
  • Participate in structured programming, study sessions, and enrichment activities.
  • Provide overnight supervision on a rotating duty schedule.

Residential Counselors are compensated at $23 per hour for up to 28 scheduled work hours per week during the residential component.
On-campus housing and meals are provided during the residential component and are considered part of the total compensation package for this position.
Due to the nature of a live-in residential program, counselors are expected to be present in assigned housing Sunday evening through Thursday evening. While counselors are responsible for supervision and student support during assigned duty periods, not all hours of presence in the residence hall are considered paid work hours. Duty schedules will be established in advance to ensure appropriate coverage and compliance with institutional and federal grant regulations.
This structure is similar to a traditional college Resident Advisor (RA) model, in which room and board are provided as part of compensation in exchange for residential supervision responsibilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serve as assistants during the non-residential portion of the program.
  • Live in the residence hall during the residential portion.
  • Supervise all project participants in general and in assigned groups.
  • Participate in summer activities (both daytime and evening) throughout the program duration.
  • Accompany and supervise students during cultural and social activities.
  • Clarify, monitor, and consistently enforce program rules.
  • Report concerns and incidents in a timely manner.
  • Attend Residential Counselor meetings and meet with Upward Bound personnel as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of services provided.
  • Lead group study sessions and workshops, including tutoring and study skills instruction.
  • Provide a pleasant and supportive atmosphere conducive to student growth.
  • Conduct periodic room inspections.
  • Take primary responsibility for assigned students by monitoring academic, personal, and social progress and updating staff as necessary.

Education and Experience
Required
  • Currently classified as a junior at a 4-year college or university, or have obtained a bachelor's degree.
  • Demonstrates experience working with high school students from various backgrounds.

Preferred
  • One year of student advising experience.
  • CPR certification.
  • Valid driver's License.
