Job description

Direct Counsel is seeking a Conflicts & New Business Intake Attorney to join a highly respected Am Law firm’s New York Office of the General Counsel.

Position Overview
A leading national firm is seeking a Conflicts & New Business Intake Associate Attorney with approximately 3+ years of experience in conflicts analysis, legal ethics, or related compliance work within a large law firm environment. This role plays a critical function in supporting the firm’s new business intake process and ensuring compliance with applicable ethical rules and conflict of interest standards.

The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of professional responsibility rules, excellent analytical abilities, and the judgment needed to assess and resolve complex conflict issues in a fast-paced law firm environment. This position is well-suited for an attorney interested in legal ethics, risk management, and firmwide compliance operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the firm’s new business intake process, including evaluation of potential clients and matters
  • Conduct conflicts of interest checks using internal and external databases
  • Analyze and resolve potential conflicts issues, including escalation where appropriate
  • Draft and implement conflict waivers and ethical wall arrangements
  • Advise attorneys and staff on professional responsibility obligations and firm policies
  • Provide guidance and training on conflicts clearance and intake procedures
  • Participate in on-call rotations for urgent conflicts issues as needed
  • Support ongoing improvements to conflicts and intake workflows and systems

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) and admission to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
  • Approximately 3+ years of experience in conflicts management, legal ethics, compliance, or related law firm role
  • Strong understanding of professional responsibility and ethics rules
  • Excellent analytical, research, and communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage sensitive, confidential information
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a high-volume, fast-paced environment
  • Strong judgment and ability to make timely, well-reasoned decisions

Compensation
The anticipated base salary for this New York-based Associate Attorney position is $170,000–$225,000 annually, depending on experience and other job-related factors consistent with applicable law. The role may also be eligible for a discretionary year-end bonus.
